Spooky
ARS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the cool of the evening
When everything is gettin kind of groovy
I call you up and ask you if you
Would you like to go with me and see a movie
First you say no, you've got some plans for the night
And then you stop, and say, all right
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you
You always keep me guessin
I never seem to know what you are thinkin
And if a fella looks at you
It's for sure your little eye will be a-winkin
I get confused, cause I don't know where I stand
And then you smile, and hold my hand
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you
Spooky
Spooky

If you decide someday to stop this little game that you are playin
I'm gonna tell you all what my heart's been a-dyin to be sayin
Just like a ghost, you've been a-hauntin my dreams
So I'll propose on Halloween
Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you

Spooky, spooky, oh whoa, all right

Spooky, oh yea yea
I said Spooky yea yea

Overall Meaning

The song Spooky by the group Atlanta Rhythm Section (ARS) is a classic rock and roll love song about a man who is intrigued by a mysterious woman. The lyrics describe a scene in the cool of the evening when the man calls up the woman and invites her to see a movie. At first, she declines, but then changes her mind and agrees to go with him. The man is confused by the woman's behavior and always feels like he is in the dark about what she is thinking. She has a way of keeping him guessing, and when other men look her way, she playfully winks at them, leaving the man feeling even more uncertain about their relationship. Despite all of this, the man cannot resist the woman's charm, describing love as kind of crazy with a spooky little girl like her.

The chorus of the song lays out the central idea of the lyrics: "Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you." The word "spooky" suggests that the woman has a certain mystique about her, which both intrigues and confounds the man. It's unclear exactly what the woman is doing to create this impression, though the lyrics provide some hints, as when the woman winks at other men. However, the overall effect is more important than the specific behaviors; the song suggests that her spooky persona is what makes her so alluring.

Overall, Spooky is a classic example of the love song genre in rock and roll, with catchy guitar riffs, a memorable chorus, and lyrics that describe the ups and downs of romantic attraction.

Rest In Peace, Barry Bailey. One of the world’s most under rated and unappreciated rock guitarists. Always one of my favorites. The solos and rhythm in this version of “Spooky” showcase his fantastic talent. Thank you my brother for a lifetime of inspiration.

A lot of music from a handful of notes, these solos included tasteful slurs and phrasing, subtle pitch bending, double stops and great placement of pinch harmonics.
Barry's solos here always stood stood out as mini masterpieces of the well constructed rock guitar solo, in same manner as Duane Allman's blues solo on Stormy Monday stood out (Fillmore East).
