Mercy
ASP Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We share your tears and we share your laughter
We share your dreams and we feed your fear
We will be gone in the morning after
The break of dawn makes us disappear

We share your lust, but we feel no passion
We need to fill our emptiness
We make you burn and we take your flashes
We must because of your willingness

So cry mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy

We are the ones sitting on your shoulder
We are the ones perching on your chest
We are the ones making the world colder
You may find sleep but you find no rest

Oh, have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy

Eleison, Eleison, Eleison
Eleison, Eleison, Eleison

We are the ones sitting on your shoulder
We are the ones perching on your chest
We are the ones making the world colder
You may find sleep but you find no rest

Oh, have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy
Have mercy
Eleison

Overall Meaning

In ASP's song "Mercy", the lyrics seem to be addressing a malevolent force that's present in the world, perhaps dark thoughts or even demons. The force is depicted as something that's highly manipulative and parasitic, feeding off of the emotions of those it encounters. It's easy to get pulled into its grasp, feeling compelled to give in to its "lust" and "flashes" even though there's no real passion behind them. The chorus repeatedly urges the force to "have mercy", using the Greek phrase "eleison" as a plea for divine intervention.

Interestingly, the verses seem to acknowledge that the force is not entirely evil, and that there's a connection between it and its victims. It shares their pain, laughter, and dreams, and perhaps even their underlying fears. The line "we must because of your willingness" also implies that at least some of the responsibility lies with the victims themselves. They've allowed the force to take control, perhaps through their own weaknesses or temptations.
