Cantique De Noel
A BOCELLI Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, holy night
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior's birth

Pour effacer la tache originale
Et de Son Père arrêter le courroux
A thrill of hope
The weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks
A new and glorious morn

Peuple à genoux, attend ta délivrance
Noel, Noel, voici le Rédempteur
Noel, Noel, voici le Rédempteur

Le Rédempteur
A brisé toute entrave
La terre est libre et le ciel est ouvert
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
Qui Lui dira notre reconnaissance?
C'est pour nous tous qu'Il naît
Qu'il souffre et meurt

Christ is the Lord
Oh, praise His name forever

Noel, Noel, chantons le Rédempteur
Noel, Noel, chantons le Rédempteur

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Cantique De Noel" speak to the essence of Christmas, emphasizing the significant theme of hope brought forth by the birth of Jesus Christ. The song opens with a vivid description of the night of Christ’s birth, portraying it as a sacred moment marked by a divine presence represented by brightly shining stars. This night is not merely a historical event but a transformative occasion for humanity, symbolizing the arrival of a Savior. Through this imagery, the lyrics evoke a sense of peace and celebration, capturing the joy that reverberates across the weary world as it awaits salvation.

The second part of the song reflects on the concept of redemption and the alleviation of human suffering. The lines refer to the act of Christ coming to Earth to erase the “original stain” of sin and mitigate the wrath of God, which emphasizes the notion of grace and forgiveness through Christ’s sacrifice. Furthermore, the mention of the “thrill of hope” indicates a powerful emotional response to this divine promise. As hope bursts forth, it heralds a new dawn filled with glory, suggesting that this moment in time shifts the trajectory of existence towards a more hopeful future. The imagery creates a contrast between despair and awakening, reinforcing the message that Christ’s presence brings about significant change and renewal.

As the lyrics transition into French, they invite the listener to embrace a posture of humility and reverence, urging the people to kneel and await their liberation. This exhortation signifies a collective acknowledgment of the need for deliverance, highlighting the communal aspect of faith and the anticipation of a Redeemer. The refrain emphasizes the idea that Christmas is not just a personal celebration but a shared experience among believers who recognize the transformative power of Christ's birth. The reminder that the Redeemer has come signifies the promise that liberation is at hand, instilling a sense of hope and togetherness among those who yearn for liberation from strife.

Lastly, the song culminates in a proclamation of Christ’s lordship and an invitation to praise His name eternally. The repeated insistence on the clamor to “sing the Redeemer” serves as a rallying cry for worship and gratitude. The mention of Christ breaking chains illustrates the overarching theme of freedom from oppression, where the lyrics convey a powerful message about inclusivity and brotherhood. By celebrating Christ’s birth, the song encapsulates the notion that His coming is for everyone—the broken, the weary, and those yearning for justice. Thus, "Cantique De Noel" stands not only as a celebration of Christmas but also as a profound declaration of hope, freedom, and the enduring message of love that Jesus embodies for all people.

MINUIT CHRETIEN
Minuit !

YES, it's a french christmas song "Minuit, Chrétiens" played for the 1st time 24 Dec 1847 in France.. and it was sung 1st time in French Canada (Quebec city) in 1853.
it's a part of the folklore now, it's the greatest classique of Noël in French. Sing in the Midnight Mass, by the elder man of the parish - it was a great source of pride and honnor to sing that famous song in front of your community. Lot of pressure to reach out and hold the famous note at the end as well ! =) We were all waiting that moment!
"Ô, Holy Night" will be done in 1853 and Ô, Divine Night in 1885
I don't find the english versions give justice of the french version ... Which why I wrote you the word by word / Translated in english :

MIDNIGHT, CHRISTIANS, It's the solemn Hour
When God-man descended to us.
To erase the stain of original sin
and to end the wrath of His Father

The entire world thrills with hope
on this night that gives it a Saviour
People! Kneel down! Wait for his delivrance (= birth of Christ)
Christmas, Christmas, Here is the Redeemer (2x)

The Redeemer has overcome every obstacle
The Earth is free and Heaven is open
He sees a brother where there was only a slave
Loves unites those that iron had chained

Who will tell him of our gratitude
It's for all of us that he is born, that he suffers and dies
People! Stand up! Sing of your delivrance (= people is saved)
Christmas, Christmas! Sing of the Redeemer (2x)

Thank you Andrea Bocelli for being in this era that i am in. It is honor to listen your voice!!!

@mikekirner

An inimitable masterpiece by Adolph Adams who composed it in the 1840's. Bocelli hits a grand slam home run with style, power, grace and stupendously explosive dynamism. Fabulously well done. God composed this music and gave it us on Earth.

@Linuxpunk81

My mother's favorite. Her father would sing it every Christmas at midnight mass. I never got to meet him but I miss my mother, especially when I hear this song but it's beautiful.
