Tu che sei tanto buono
Fammi questo piacer
Lascia una volta il cielo
E vieni a giocar
A giocare con me
Lo sai, il babbo è poveroEd io non ho giocattoli
Sono un bambino buono
Come lo fosti tu
Vedrai, però, se vieni
Noi ci divertiremo
Anche senza balocchi
Vieni, bambin Gesù
The lyrics of "Caro Gesù Bambino" express an earnest and heartfelt plea from a child to the Christ child, or the baby Jesus. The opening lines, "Caro Gesù bambino / Tu che sei tanto buono," illustrate the reverence and affection the singer holds for Jesus. By addressing Jesus as "buono," the child acknowledges Christ's inherent goodness and benevolence, establishing a tender relationship. The plea to "fammi questo piacer" indicates a desire for Jesus to grant a simple request—essentially a call for a divine visitation. The child’s wish for Jesus to leave the heavens suggests a longing for connection and companionship, emblematic of the innocence and purity commonly associated with childhood. Asking Jesus to "giocar" with him highlights the child’s yearning for joy and playfulness, reinforcing the theme of longing for closeness with the divine figure.
The juxtaposition of childhood innocence with the realities of life is presented in the lines, "Lo sai, il babbo è povero / Ed io non ho giocattoli." Here, the child reveals their modest background, indicating a home life devoid of material abundance. This detail evokes a sense of empathy and vulnerability. The child identifies himself as a "buono" child, implicitly referencing the idea that goodness itself brings value beyond material possessions. This acknowledgment points to deeper themes of worth and happiness not being grounded in wealth or toys, but rather in a loving spirit and moral integrity. The use of the phrase "come lo fosti tu" serves as an implicit reference to Jesus’ own humble beginnings, reinforcing the idea that both the child and Jesus share a bond rooted in humility and goodness.
The anticipation of joy and connection with Jesus is palpable in the subsequent lines, "Vedrai, però, se vieni / Noi ci divertiremo." The child's invitation for Jesus to join in playful activities lays bare a profound belief in the transformative power of their companionship. This is not merely about the activities they might share, but rather about the joy derived from shared experiences. The phrase "anche senza balocchi" suggests that true happiness can exist independently of material playthings, emphasizing that the presence of the divine can fill the void left by physical absence or economic hardship. Herein lies a beautifully profound truth: that the essence of joy comes from togetherness and love, rather than the superficialities of the world.
Ultimately, "Caro Gesù Bambino" is a touching reflection on the pure desires of a child, yearning not only for Jesus’ presence but for the innocence of childhood. By asking for play with Jesus, a figure synonymous with love and care, the child expresses a longing for a friend who embodies the ideals of kindness and joy amidst struggles. This gentle call highlights the nurturing side of faith, where even amidst poverty, beauty can be found in imaginary play and spiritual connection. The final plea, “Vieni, bambin Gesù,” encapsulates the essence of faith itself—an invitation to trust in the divine, to seek solace in simplicity, and to find companionship in the heart of one's beliefs, illustrating the encompassing theme of love and hope inherent in the Christmas story.

Caro Gesù bambino
Dear Baby Jesus,
Tu che sei tanto buono
You who embody such kindness,
Fammi questo piacer
Grant me this favor,
Lascia una volta il cielo
Leave the heavens just this once,
E vieni a giocar
And come to play,
A giocare con me
To share in play with me.
Lo sai, il babbo è povero
You know, my father is poor,
Ed io non ho giocattoli
And I have no toys,
Sono un bambino buono
I am a good child,
Come lo fosti tu
Just as you were.
Vedrai, però, se vieni
You will see, however, if you come,
Noi ci divertiremo
We will have fun,
Anche senza balocchi
Even without toys,
Vieni, bambin Gesù
Come, Baby Jesus.

I used to own a 45 rpm recording of Caro Gesu Bambino by an Italian singer named Bruno Pallesi. It was beautiful, with a children’s chorus and a harp, recorded, I think, in 1962. The record was given to me in the late 1960s by a friend who didn’t want it anymore! I told her she was crazy. I asked if I could have it, she said yes. But I have moved several times since then, and I lost track of it. It’s gone! 😢
