Caruso
A BOCELLI Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Poi all'improvisso uscì una lacrima

Confondono pensieri

Overall Meaning

"Caruso," a song by Andrea Bocelli that pays tribute to the legendary Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, is imbued with deep emotional resonances and rich imagery. The lyrics begin with a vivid portrayal of a coastal setting in Sorrento, where the sea glimmers and the wind howls. This backdrop serves as a metaphor for the passions and tumult of life. The "old terrace" suggests a place of nostalgia, where memories linger, setting the stage for a poignant connection between the singers—an unnamed man and a woman. Their embrace, especially after the woman’s tears, underscores the tenderness that follows hardship, portraying love as a source of solace and strength amidst sorrow.

As the man clears his throat and begins to sing, the lyrics reveal a heartfelt declaration echoed throughout the song: "Te voglio bene assai," which translates to "I love you very much." This refrain becomes a powerful motif signifying an emotional bond that transcends mere affection; it portrays love as a visceral and all-consuming force, a "chain" that melds their very blood and essence. The imagery of the sea and blood intertwines to signify the profound interconnectedness of love and life itself. The man's expression of love not only embodies a personal sentiment but reflects an existential truth, reinforcing the idea that love is fundamental to the human experience.

Further into the narrative, the lyrics evince a sense of melancholy and reflection as the man’s thoughts drift to "the lights in the middle of the sea," conjuring memories of America and the dreams associated with it. However, the realization that these lights are merely fishing lamps serves to ground him in the present moment, highlighting the contrast between aspiration and reality. The subsequent line, "Sentì il dolore nella musica," indicates that through music, he experiences a release of pain, and the presence of the moon in the sky brings a sense of beauty even in sorrow. This moment reflects Caruso's own artistic journey, where music served both as an escape and a means to confront emotional despair, echoing the resilience inherent in the human spirit.

As the song progresses, the beauty of the woman's gaze becomes a transformative experience that transcends verbal expression. Her "green eyes like the sea" evoke the depth and mystery of love that surpasses ordinary language. In her presence, everything else diminishes, including his memories of America, indicating how intimate connections have the power to reshape one’s reality. The concluding lines encapsulate a bittersweet acceptance of life’s inevitable end, coupled with an affirmation of inner happiness as he resumes his song. Ultimately, "Caruso" emerges as a tribute not only to love but also to the timeless power of music and artistic expression—a reminder that through love and art, one can find joy even amidst life's transience.

One of my favorite songs of all time.
Here, where the sea shines
and the wind howls,
on the old terrace
beside the gulf of Sorrento,
a man embraces a girl
after the tears,
then clears his throat
and continues the song:

I love you very much,
very, very much, you know;
it is a chain by now
that heats the blood inside the veins, you know…

He saw the lights out on the sea,
thought of the nights there in America,
but they were only the fishermen’s lamps
and the white wash astern.
He felt the pain in the music
and stood up from the piano,
but when he saw the moon
emerging from a cloud,
death also seemed sweeter to him.
He looked the girl in the eyes,
those eyes as green as the sea.
Then suddenly a tear fell
and he believed he was drowning.

I love you very much,
very, very much, you know,
it is a chain by now
that heats the blood inside the vein you know…

The power of opera,
where every drama is a hoax;
with a little make-up and with
mime
you can become someone else.
But two eyes that look at you,
so close and real,
make you forget the words,
confuse your thoughts,

so everything becomes small,
also the nights there in America.
You turn and see your life
through the white wash astern.
But, yes, it is life that ends
and he did not think much about it
on the contrary, he already felt happy
and continued his song:

I love you very much,
very, very much, you know,
it is a chain by now
that heats the blood inside the veins, you know…

I love you very much,
very, very much, you know,52
it is a chain by now
that heats the blood inside the veins, you know…

You can become someone else

You turn around and see your life

My mom loves this song. She deserves the world but received everything but that. She loves sailing and the Mediterranean sea. When I become rich, I will surprise her with the world she deserves while playing this song. I cannot wait. My mom is my absolute world ❤

The first time I heard him sing this I broke down and sobbed. I thought he was sent from heaven. I got to see him live and the entire audience was crying..What an amazing gift when you can move emotionally an entire audience to tears.
