O Tannenbaum
A BOCELLI Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum, risplendi nella notte
O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum, risplendi nella notte
Le luci tue scintillano
Come le stelle brillano

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree
Your branches green delight us
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree
Your branches green delight us
They are green when summer days are bright
They are green when winter snow is white
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree
Your branches green delight us

O albero che illumini la notte di Natale
Le luci tue ricordano la luce del Signore

Ogni mia notte splenderà se la tua luce brillerà
O albero che illumini la notte di Natale

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Andrea Bocelli's "O Tannenbaum," originally a German Christmas carol, beautifully celebrate the Christmas tree as a symbol of hope, fidelity, and joy during the festive season. The repeated exclamation "O Tannenbaum," or "O Christmas Tree," serves as both an invocation and a reflection on the profound emotional and aesthetic impact that the tree has on people's lives, illuminating the dark nights of winter. The imagery of the tree sparkling with lights evokes a sense of wonder and enchantment, reminiscent of stars shining in the sky. This opening sequence emphasizes the tree’s role as a centerpiece of Christmas celebrations, encouraging a sense of togetherness and warmth during a time often associated with cold and darkness.

As the song progresses, the lyrics delve deeper into the qualities of the Christmas tree, noting its unwavering greenery. This steadfastness is highlighted in the lines that mention how the tree remains lush not only in the summertime but also during the harsh winter months, even when covered in snow. This metaphor of eternal green symbolizes hope and endurance, suggesting that just as the tree maintains its beauty irrespective of the changing seasons, people too can find resilience amidst life’s challenges. The use of phrases like "wie treu sind deine Blätter" ("how faithful are your leaves") reinforces this theme of loyalty and fidelity, monumentally elevating the Christmas tree to an emblem of constancy and reliability in both nature and life.

Furthermore, the English translation continues to articulate the delight that the evergreen branches of the tree bring. The joy derived from the tree is illustrated as a counter to the cold, starkness of winter, presenting the tree as a beacon of vibrancy and life when days are short and nights are long. The repetition of the phrase "Your branches green delight us" reveals a shared appreciation for the tree’s beauty, which serves as a reminder of the joys of nature and the comfort it brings to individuals during the holiday season. Through this lens, the Christmas tree transcends its material existence, transforming into a symbol of community joy, mirth, and the togetherness that the holiday season encourages.

Finally, the closing verses shift toward a more spiritual interpretation, linking the tree’s illuminating lights to a divine presence. The mention of "la luce del Signore" ("the light of the Lord") connects the beauty of the Christmas tree to themes of faith and spirituality associated with Christmas. The tree, embodying both the secular and sacred aspects of the holiday, becomes a metaphor for the divine light that guides and comforts one's life, imparting a sense of serenity and hope. The closing line expresses an intimate connection between the tree’s glow and the personal experiences of the singer, emphasizing that the light of the Christmas tree can turn even the darkest nights bright with hope. Through this thematic tapestry, the song ultimately conveys that amid life’s faintness and challenges, the enduring presence of love, faith, and community, symbolized by the Christmas tree, lights the pathway forward.

I'm from Australia where we have winter in June. A couple of weeks ago, I purchased a decedious plant for my garden and my mum, who's unfamiliar with decedious plants, thought it was dead, and I told her, no, that's just want all decedious plants look like in winter. I also explained to her, imagine living in Northern Germany, where the nights are short, you're probably buried in a metre or so of snow, it's really dark because of how far north you are, it's a couple of days short of the winter solcist and you see the one tree with leaves on it. Now she understands the context behind this beautiful song. This is the best version of it. You're lucky you get to enjoy it in its original language. It's truely wonderful. And also, it actually makes more sense to you at Christmas time. I am looking at my decedious plant, thinking of this song
