The Logic is sound: Door Dash can use those bots for very short routes (one mile or less), thereby leaving the human dashers to deal with longer ones. However, a rebuttal is that DD can coordinate with Dashers who are already making deliveries. Also, though that guy was unsuccessful in stealing the contents of the bots, I didn’t think the test was truly “real world”. Try that in a neighborhood with homeless people around… or also with more disgruntled Door Dashers…

I think it would be a great idea to run a network of these robots that are human controlled rather than automated. People who are disabled and can't work, or people wanting to pick up extra cash on their spare time could operate these bots from home. They can run it like an Uber system where people are assigned a bot and must operate it within a set schedule. They get paid based on the time of delivery and tips from the customers. Because these people are working from home at their own comfort and leisure, you can pay them less than a conventional delivery driver, so the restaurant saves money either way.

So when this becomes commonplace and we “see them everywhere,” in densely populated cities like NYC, Boston, Chicago etc and they expand beyond DoorDash to many other restaurants and delivery services like groceries and documents couriers...how many of these rolling ice chests/tripping hazards will be on congested sidewalks at peak times? And NYC, Boston, New Orleans and Philly always have scaffolding and utility/street maintenance that may create insurmountable obstacles for some of the prototypes.

Tips are generally based on the money spent. A small order worth less money earns a smaller tip for the same amount of effort. Think about it like this, would you prefer to deliver two pizza's to an office, or 600? Speaking from experience, when you deliver 600, they generally tip you $300. You deliver 2, you get a $7 tip. This robot is literally taking deliveries nobody wants to waste their time on when they could take a $40 order. The robot can take all the $14 orders.

I was thinking the same thing. It is an easy pejorative message to say, "o look the robot will handle it because this human doesn't want it." Is that really true? So many people making too little to support families and no one "wants it." My question is why would hey not want a job....because the employer is underpaying for the work and you can't survive off of the income? Plus, it is easy to say, look this robot can only do so much, so of course this isn't going to take your job. The robot can only do so much RIGHT NOW, but what about the future. One can't stop automation, but we need to take a serious look at how it will impact society. People do need jobs, they do need income. And, while this video clearly recognizes that; it's assurances that they are contributing to something positive for the worker are all bunk.

Not that I would ever do it but if someone really wanted to steal these things, it could be done fairly easily. Signal blocking by jamming or faraday,..throw it in your truck real quick and drive off...amongst other things. I'm sure eventually, someone WILL steal one of these things just to show it can be done.

I feel like he didn't try that hard to rob it. You could easily conceal your face, throw an opaque sack around it to block the cameras, put it in a Faraday cage in a vehicle and in a more empty location have plenty of time to figure out how to break the lock.

the robot carries a max of 22 pounds. Compare that to a wheelchair that will move atleast 100 pounds, nearly 5 times as much. The technology is there for wheelchairs, but is much more expensive

I'm surprised that directed EMP devices haven't been selling to people who's jobs are threatened by these machines.
One touch and off it goes for expensive repairs. Keep doing it enough, and the company will get the hint...

The robot only takes 6 hours to deliver your food, it picks up three orders at three different restaurants so what makes more per hour on tips then it drives right past your house and halfway across town to deliver somebody else's order first. It's as dumb as the real doordashers that don't realize you can see what they're doing on the Google Map.

"miles and miles and no one has done anything yet", but later we find out they are followed closely by a team of people. If I were a thief I am sure I would spot that. I am thinking anyone could pick one up take it to an alleyway and use a crow bar to get the food?

Finger print security, if you try and rob it, basically takes your finger prints when you touch its pretective shell. Easy way to stop criminals, then all you have to do is get the police to extract the finger prints, hand etc.

Glad the robots are delivering! While there are good delivery people being honest and clean there are the gross ones that eat your food in their cars, the ones that pick their feet with their hands while waiting to get your order to their car. It’s gross and unsanitary.

"Only small meals that dashers don't want to deliever" bullshit. The second a corporation realizes they can invest in ANY form of automation and not have to pay an hourly wage to a human they will do it. If they eventually get the change to mass produce these things and make them bigger any greedy company will jump at the chance to get in on the action and fire delivery people when it catches on.

You could easily steal from this thing with the right tools, think of it as a small armored car robbery. When these things go unsupervised in the future, they're ripe from the picking.

I've seen these things before on facebook, where there was loads of folk mocking them, and quite understandably too. I think they're ludicrous. And I take it they can only go where it's fairly level and step-free etc. I'd like to see them climb the intensely steep hills in towns like huddersfield, sowerby bridge and halifax in west yorkshire or colne in lancashire for instance? especially when those hills are covered in ICE in the depth of winter, they'd get no further than the bottom, unless they were fitted with some kind of super gripping tyres, and even then the battery would most likely be flat before they could get even halfway up. And they couldn't deliver anything to me as I live up several steep stone steps and right next to a very busy main road with no footpath on my side so they'd be beaten there wouldn't they?! And I bet I could get one open in seconds with my floorboard lifting tools, no problem. And I take it there's no seriously rough and anti-social neighbourhoods in milton keynes like there is in so many areas of Britain where they'd soon be vandalised and robbed etc. and in some places most likely dumped in rivers or canals etc. or else the local kids would try and ride them down hills etc. And isn't it also possible that someone somewhere could hack into them remotely and possibly reuse them for criminal uses? And I take it that all the pavements in milton keynes must be kept totally free of dog's muck and worms and slugs etc. as well as ice and snow so the robot's wheels can be kept all nice and clean? Totally unrealistic I think, how can they avoid such stuff? And what happens if someone disguises their self and sneaks up behind one and sticks tape over the cameras? It's be disabled then wouldn't it?!
