A Cursive Memory got its start when Colin Baylen and Shaun Profeta met at a birthday party. Shaun is the brother of Hellogoodbye drummer Chris Profeta. Mark Borst-Smith and Brian Bolen soon joined, forming a band originally called The Vagrants. At first, the band played only covers of some of their favorite bands, such as blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World, but soon started writing their own music. Drummer Dillan Wheeler climbed onboard to replace the departing Boylen, and A Cursive Memory signed with Vagrant Records before issuing their full-length debut, Changes, in February 2008.
The band debuted with a music video for their song "Everything" on the social networking website MySpace.

The lyrics to A Cursive Memory's song "Figure It Out" carry a message of hope and acceptance, particularly towards the end of a person's life. The first verse acknowledges the pain and struggles the person has gone through, but also highlights the surprise in the fact that there are still words left to be spoken. It then moves into a chorus which emphasizes that, when it comes down to it, there is nothing anyone can say or do to change the past.
