All The Same
A Drop in the Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's No Tears Coming
Down
And Though
I Try To Cry
The Thin Gray Line Is Hard To Find
The Flag Is Different, Isn't It?
And When
I Try To See The Change
They're All The Same,
All The Same
This Being Right Has Got Me Wrong
It's
Hard To Tell What's Going On Without The Streets Dragging
You Down
The Line Is Different, Isn't It?
But When I Try To See The Change
They're All The Same,
All The Same
This Being Right Has Got Me Wrong
All The Same
It's Hard To Tell What's Going On
The Flag Is Different, Isn't It?
And When
I Try To See The Change They're

All The Same,
All The Same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of A Drop in the Gray's song "All the Same" appear to express the frustration and disillusionment of the singer with the state of society and politics. The opening lines, "There's no tears coming down / And though I try to cry / The thin gray line is hard to find," suggest emotional numbness and an inability to engage with one's feelings, perhaps due to a sense of detachment or alienation. The reference to the "thin gray line" may imply a sense of ambiguity or confusion in the singer's perception of reality, as though distinctions between right and wrong, good and bad, are becoming increasingly blurred or indistinguishable.

The mention of a "different" flag may suggest a symbolic shift or change in the singer's environment, yet the assertion that "they're all the same" implies a sense of stagnation or lack of progress. The repetition of the line "this being right has got me wrong" reinforces the idea of a disconnection between personal beliefs and societal norms or expectations. The final lines, "It's hard to tell what's going on / The line is different, isn't it? / But when I try to see the change / They're all the same, all the same," convey a pervasive sense of disillusionment and frustration with the inability to effect real change or improvement.

This got some airplay on WTCS-AM in the fall of 1984. This track always sounded like a November day to me (which is a good thing from my point of view). My mind's eye can still see that old control room with the ancient equipment, 45 jackets stapled to the wall, and bare fluorescent tubes in a single fixture. Nothing digital except for my watch. The most advanced thing we had was a still-new satellite receiver (for a nine-foot fiberglass dish) to pick up the NBC news feeds. Nice memories.

That's great - thank you for posting that. I played it on my tiny college radio show and loved this band since then. :-D

My fave fall album back in the day. I live in Austin, TX and run into the lead singer on occasion.

I've loved this since the fist and only time I ever heard it on the radio back then. Thanks to George GiMarc and the Rock and Roll Alternative for turning me on to such great music I never would have heard otherwise.
