Everyone Is Gay
A Great Big World Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you're gay then you're gay
Don't pretend that you're straight
You can be who you are any day of the week
You are unlike the others
So strong and unique
We're all with you

If you're straight well that's great
You can help procreate
And make gay little babies
For the whole human race
Make a world we can live in
Where the one who you love's not an issue

'Cause we're all somewhere in the middle
We're all just looking for love to change the world
What if the world stops spinning tomorrow?
We can't keep running away from who we are

If you're gay then you're gay
If you're straight well that's great
If you fall in between that's the best way to be
You've got so many options
Every fish in the sea wants to kiss you

'Cause we're all somewhere in the middle
We're all just looking for love to change the world
What if the world stops spinning tomorrow?
We can't keep running away from who we are

And we're all here in it together

We're one step closer to breaking down the walls
Everyone is gay

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of A Great Big World's song Everyone Is Gay promote acceptance and support for LGBTQ+ individuals. The opening lines "If you're gay then you're gay, don't pretend that you're straight" highlight the importance of being true to yourself and not hiding one's sexuality for society's sake. The following lines "You can be who you are any day of the week, you are unlike the others, so strong and unique, we're all with you" emphasize the idea that being different is not something to be ashamed of, but rather something to be celebrated and embraced.

The song also touches upon the topic of procreation and the misconception that being gay is a hindrance to human reproduction. Lines such as "You can help procreate and make gay little babies for the whole human race" make it clear that being gay does not prevent individuals from contributing to society in meaningful ways. The lyrics suggest that a world without discrimination, where love is not an issue, can be created by accepting and celebrating people for who they are.

The chorus "We're all somewhere in the middle, we're all just looking for love to change the world" highlights the universality of the human experience and the importance of love in making the world a better place. The lyrics suggest that personal differences should not be a barrier to love and acceptance, and that everyone should be allowed to love who they want to love.

This song was the thing that made my young homophobic 10 year old self realize that being gay was, you know, OKAY!!! I grew up in a religious family so I never really knew that two genders loving each other was even allowed at all, and whenever somebody mentioned it I would act so weirded out and disgusted..

This song taught me that no matter who you love, we are all people who just want peace in the world..

Now that I’ve matured and grown, I can proudly say that I was very stupid for judging people for who they love..

Especially since I found out I’m a lesbian

they never fully excepted me.

and I'm now a proud pansexual trans man. :)

edit: Nevermind, I don't next time I hear my mom say she needs time to mourn, im gonna let her mourn her own life.

me i forgot how many months ago;
I just found out i'm straight. I thought i'm bisexual but i just don't really get attracted to girls. I support everyone from the lgbtq+ community, i'm straight ally and i have no reason to hate anybody for who they love.
