The Hammers Fall
A Loss for Words Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The alarm clock rings…
I feel so weak,
And the sunlight shining in my eyes it makes it hard to sleep.
The rooms are cold,
Smell like piss and blood.
Everyday I wake I feel I'm knee deep in the flood.
Spending days passing through and moving on,
Never realizing what I've had until it's gone.
And now my eyes are open wide…

I can't go on,
Singing the same old songs that I have always sung.
About life and loss and the places I belong.
Singing the same old songs that I have always sung.
Hoping the melodies will carry me home…

The alarm clock rings…
The floor is cold, before my eyes are open I'm falling out the door.
The wind is fierce,
It chaps and burns my eyes.
It all sounds well and fine just fucking try it on for size!
Day in day out.
The hammers fall.
It's all in due time that they come to crush us all.
And now my eyes are open wide…

I can't go on,
Singing the same old songs that I have always sung.
About life and loss and the places I belong.
Singing the same old songs that I have always sung.
Hoping the melodies will carry me home.

Follow this path until it fails,
Carry my life on fingernails.
I will sing until my throat goes numb.
Be the chance you'll never take,
When it stares you in the face.
I will sing while I'm still young!

I will sing while I'm still young

Overall Meaning

"The Hammers Fall" by A Loss for Words is a song that talks about the cyclical, mundane nature of life, and how sometimes it can make you feel stuck in a rut. The lyrics in the first verse are quite vivid, describing waking up feeling weak, surrounded by a cold and dirty environment. The repetition of "everyday I wake I feel I'm knee-deep in the flood" suggests a feeling of being overwhelmed and stuck in a difficult situation. The second part of the verse talks about how the singer has been going through life without really realizing the good things around them, and it's only now that their "eyes are open wide" that they can see things clearly.

The chorus talks about the frustration of feeling like you're going through the same motions every day, singing the same old songs (both literally and metaphorically), without any change or progress. They long for something to lift them out of the routine and carry them home. The second verse is a continuation of the first, with more detailed descriptions of the challenging environment they're in. The line "it all sounds well and fine just fucking try it on for size!" is a particularly pointed statement about how easy it is to judge someone else's situation when you haven't experienced it yourself. The verse ends with the bleak line "it's all in due time that they come to crush us all," which is a reminder of mortality and the inevitability of hardship.

The bridge is an uplifting moment, with the singer encouraging themselves (and maybe the listener) to keep going, even when things are tough. The lines "follow this path until it fails, carry my life on fingernails" suggest a kind of "grit your teeth and bear it" mentality, while "be the chance you'll never take when it stares you in the face" is a call to action to take risks and make the most of opportunities. The final line "I will sing while I'm still young" is a reminder not to waste time and to enjoy life while it's still possible.

Rise is just getting some of the best bands now. I absolutely dig it. I love that they're starting to branch off and sign more Pop-Punk. Don't get me wrong, I love post-hardcore and metalcore music too; But It's always nice when a label has diversity. Keeps me hooked on that label.
