Next to Ungodliness
A Lot Like Birds Lyrics

(Premeditate!) I can't see far past the present
And fortune-telling's not my profession but
I can see the crystal ball,
Formed out of the water.
Through it, I can see it all.

When they ask you,
What are you hiding from?
All of the others in the way!
And on this wall
A different reflection,
I can recall it's not the same face.

Quick! Pull this rope.
Wash your hands of this.
It's the dark reflecting.
Images reflecting,
And you're full of it.
When all our thoughts are dirty,
Can we get them clean?

Hold our heads under the water,
Let our eyes roll back and look deep.
Deep into our skulls.
Is there anything worth keeping?

When they ask you,
What are you hiding from:
All of the others in the way!
(The sink is full, the bubbles rise and stare at me like spider eyes.)
And on this wall:
A different reflection,
I can recall it's not the same face.

When nothing else will hold me up,
Broken tiles on the bathroom floor will have to do.
If nothing else can pull me through.
I just can't remember!
Why can't I remember?
When's the first time I looked in the mirror
And said "I hope I die"?

I know you keep pretending.
Let me be the same!
Let me be this way!
I know you keep pretending.
Let me be the same!
Let me be this way!

I know you keep pretending.
Let me be the same!
Let me be this way!
I know you keep pretending.

Why does all post-hardcore occur in bathrooms?

Alex Baribeault

@RheanKing Well said

@Thomas Hinds This one has to do with the fact that the album is a metaphorical house and each song on the album talks about a certain part of the house. Next to Ungodliness takes place in the bathroom, Connector is the hallway, each with their own demons in it

RheanKing

Cuz you have nothing to hide in the bathroom. You're naked, or releasing. Or both. Metaphorically, this is when/where most members of society are in their rawest form. It's a great place to let go of shit...

Is anyone else as blown away as me by the ending riff? It's like, 12/4 + 13/4 and then Joe decides to start slamming dotted quarter notes on his cymbals over top of everything. This band is made of wizards

Joseph Arrington

Thank you for all the love. The ending is felt in 4/4 for 7 bars and the final bar is in 5/4 and then it loops.

@checkyourvitalsigns great fuckin tab dude! Sounds spot on, been waiting for this tab for years

Zax Zumu

They said in an interview about the album that the whole song was in 5/8 because it was written around Joe just jamming and making shit up on the fly.@Ambiguous_Lumberjack

if anyone is still wondering how to play this and has guitar pro, ive put out a tab on ultimate guitar: https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/a_lot_like_birds/next_to_ungodliness_guitar_pro_2559213

The whole song is just 5/8, they said it in na interview. This is a very, VERY confusing time signature. At the ending, Joe keeps playing 5/8, but with time manipulation. This band is full of monsters, I cannot follow the guitar on this song, it's just too awesome.
