A Silver Mt. Zion is a band formed in 1999, in Montreal, Quebec, by Godspeed You! Black Emperor musicians Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. According to an interview with VPRO Radio in The Netherlands, originally the project was for Efrim to learn how to score music, but the idea was soon abandoned as Efrim decided that he preferred music not to be defined by rules, preferring simply what sounds best. Despite this, he continued the project out of a desire to experiment with ideas that would not work within the context of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The decision to record an album was partly inspired by the death of his dog Wanda, who had died while Godspeed You! Black Emperor was on tour. He wanted to record an album in her memory, but did not feel that he could effectively do this through Godspeed's collective, consensus format.
Unlike Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion's music often features vocals. The last few albums they have released contain no purely instrumental tracks. Efrim confessed that he was uncomfortable with this at first, feeling "foolish" and uncomfortable with the role of the singer in music generally. That is, he did not want to be the focus of the band's music but rather wished to use vocals as a stylistic tool. Some fans were initially ambivalent about the use of vocals, but Efrim's poetic lyrical style is now well respected among fans. Furthermore, A Silver Mt. Zion's fanbase has expanded, and they are no longer seen merely as an offshoot of Godspeed You! Black Emperor but as a unique and separate entity.
The addition of members has moved their music from a well weighted, and curiously empty (in terms of space) sound to all encompassing and complex arrangements, recently focusing more on vocal layers.
Other than the main three members, various other people joined the band for recording and touring including: Beckie Foon, Ian Ilavsky, Jessica Moss and Scott Levine Gilmore.

The Triumph of Our Tired Eyes
A Silver Mt. Zion Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We have surely lost our way.
In strip malls full of cancer,
And a chemical rain.
Lover, sweet lover,
Please don't discipline your hands.
Just kiss me in the morning,
In your dirtiest pants.
We will find our way.
We will find our way.
There is beauty in this land,
But I don't often see it.
There is beauty in this land,
But I don't often feel it.
Pimples are flowers,
Musicians are cowards!
Let's argue in the kitchen,
For hours and hours.
Tomorrow is a travesty,
Tomorrow should be ours.
Musicians are cowards!
Musicians are cowards!
Musicians are cowards!
Musicians are cowards!
Musicians are cowards!
Musicians are cowards!
Musicians are cowards!
Musicians are cowards!
The soldiers with their specialists,
And the pigs with their guns cannot stop,
The lost ones and the desperate ones and the driven ones.
The soldiers with their cigarettes,
And the police with their guns cannot stop,
The lonesome ones and the desperate ones and the smart ones.
So come on friends,
To the barricades again.
So come on friends,
To the barricades again.
So come on friends,
To the barricades again.
So come on friends,
To the barricades again.
We will find our way,
We will find our way.
The lyrics of A Silver Mt. Zion's song The Triumph of Our Tired Eyes are poetic and powerful, addressing issues of societal and environmental decay, political activism, and emotional connection. The opening lines, "Sisters and Brothers, we have surely lost our way," set the tone for the song's exploration of the disconnection and disillusionment many feel in the modern world. The mention of "strip malls full of cancer" and "chemical rain" points towards the destruction of the natural world and its impact on human health.
The second verse, which begins with "There is beauty in this land, but I don't often see it," speaks to the idea that we often don't appreciate or recognize the beauty around us due to our preoccupation with the negative aspects of life. The line "Pimples are flowers, Musicians are cowards" can be interpreted as a call to reject society's futile obsession with perfection and embrace imperfection, while also commenting on the cowardice of those who remain silent in the face of injustice.
The final lines, "The soldiers with their specialists and the pigs with their guns cannot stop, the lost ones and the desperate ones and the driven ones," lyrically express the idea that no amount of force can silence the voices of those who are determined to make a change. The recurring chorus of "We will find our way," is a message of hope, urging us to persevere in the face of adversity and ultimately to overcome.

A Silver Mount Zion's music is amazingly good at helping your heart finish breaking, and then picking it up to get put back together. This song, especially so.

When we finally cross the barricades
With the angels on our side
When we finally deny all the popular lies
When we find that doubt and worry die
How will it feel?
