A Skylit Drive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our differences set us apart, they can't bind me
Our hearts have been equivalent from the start, if only
I spoke these words at the right time
At a loss for words to build the right line

Reflect a traitor to make my mind cry open
Behave, like gentlemen, like proper men we dive in
Live, you'll be the proof of my existence
My pride my dreams
They all belong just to me

So alive we coexist, so envious, we pray for this

Listen to my story, this may be our last chance
People die and people dance

Reflect a traitor to make my mind cry open
Behave, like gentlemen, like proper men we dive in
Live, you'll be the proof of my existence
My pride and dreams
They all belong just to me

So alive we coexist, so envious, we pray for this

Listen to my story, this may be our last chance
People die and people dance

Overall Meaning

The opening line acknowledges how our individual differences set us apart from one another. However, these differences don't have the power to restrict or restrain the singer's freedom. Throughout the song, the lyrics express a sense of ambition and urgency, with the singer expressing a desire to convey their feelings accurately before it's too late. They regret not speaking their truth sooner and not having the right words to express themselves.

The lines "Reflect a traitor to make my mind cry open" and "Behave, like gentlemen, like proper men we dive in" suggest that the singer is at war with themselves, struggling to balance their desires and their sense of propriety. The phrases "live, you'll be the proof of my existence" and "my pride my dreams, they all belong just to me" highlight a sense of self-importance and individuality, with the singer wanting their life to be a testament to their existence.

The last two lines "Listen to my story, this may be our last chance, people die and people dance" is a poignant reminder to seize the moment and to make the most of every opportunity. It's a reminder that life is short and that we ought to take risks while there is still time.

@blahblahuma

2:53-
Put the pieces together asking myself what happened
Story's similar to Kendrick's verse with Imagine Dragons
Hate those turbulent skies I'm trying to find a Balance, now hand me Life's chalice
Flying faster than Superman when his heart's broken
But I'm high so exchange the word flying for floating
Weed smoking, keep focused and keep going
And then you'll notice,
wings only get clipped when the fucking bird is not in motion.

SKYLIT FOREVER 💕

@sacredxgeometry

It's so screwed up, but this album came out 14 years ago. I'm blown away by that.
I know without a shadow of a doubt that this album was incredibly ahead of its time for 2008 in the post-hardcore genre, especially the mainstream emocore type. A Skylit Drive was one of the first bands I ever actually got into and my brother first showed me them in the third grade...granted, I did stop listening after Identity On Fire, which I think was this band's last hurrah. But they really had 4 solid albums and that's more than some bands even from their timeframe can say! This album specifically means more to me than most albums do. It isn't JUST music, there's more to it in the lyrics and the "vibe", from the steady bass, to the pentatonic shrill lead guitars, to the frantic harsh vocals, and the beauteous singing. The drums and production on this record are also a staple for me in terms of mix, and to this day I've rarely heard a better kick sound on a metalcore-adjacent record.
Blessed to have heard this!

I don't think I'll ever hear a song ending make me crave more of a song more then this ending ever. It makes me euphoric.

@chriscros13
