The second album, 1988's ...From the Inside, remains one of the underappreciated classics of late-80s industrial music. Beginning with the rock-oriented "Bend My Body Armour", the album is remarkably varied for the genre, featuring post-funk-disco ("Choke"), ballads ("The Last Wave", the title track), and muscular club tracks (the dancefloor smash "Mambo Witch"). The album is notable for its peculiarly interesting lyrics, which feature odd, vaguely morbid phrasing ("muscles contorted in atrocity posture") that give the record a depth atypical of the genre. The subsequent single, "The Colosseum Crash" b/w "Muscle Machine", highlighted the Wax Trax! phase of the band's career.
While not as consistantly striking or varied, the followup Kiss of Fury has several songs worthy of its predecessor, notably the tense, moody "Crimewave" and the single "Firewalker". For the most part, the album picks up the rock-oriented direction of "Bend My Body Armour" with tracks such as "The Parallax View" and "Cold War in the Brainbox"; they contiune largely in this direction for their '90s records, Vengance C.O.D. and Megabyte.
Flesh and Fire, from 1991, collects some top-notch remixes of A Split-Second's 80s output. The Koen Tillie remix of "Flesh" is an ace example of early-90s techno; a piano-and-strings "Concerto" version of "From the Inside", newly titled "Taken In", mines the depth and emotion of the original; a dub-ish fusion of "Close Combat" and "Muscle Machine" further demonstrates the band's creativity.
Following a series of mediocre remix CD singles, Chrismarr Chayell left the band, while Mark Ickx continued recording under the A Split-Second moniker.
Burn Out
A Split Second Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Watch her slipping swiftly
She knows the whole damn world is watching her
She couldn't give a hoot in hell
She'll never make the frontpage headlines
She knows the story far too well
Taking her chances
Burn out
Backward glances
Her hands still sticky from the night before
What's the difference, it's all she's suited for
Dragging the relics of her emotions down the street
Burned out memories from between the sheets
Rien que rêves morcelées
Le désis, les fleurs maladives
Je ném Peux plus
Les gémissements dans les yeux révulsés
La vie dans les biotes D'ennui
La vie dans les boites D'envie
L'envie
The lyrics of A Split Second's song, Burn Out, seem to be about a woman who is aware that people are watching her as she walks down the street. She, however, could not care less about what people might be thinking of her, as she knows that she'll never make it to any front page. The song describes her as 'burnt out', as she seems to be living a life filled with emptiness, dominated by casual sexual encounters.
The first verse of the lyrics paints a picture of a woman walking down the street, aware of her surroundings but not bothered by them. She's slipping swiftly, indicating that she's moving quickly, perhaps in a deliberate effort to get somewhere. The second verse, however, reveals that she's someone who's consumed with the emptiness of her life. Her hands are sticky from the night before, which implies that she's been engaging in some sort of behavior that left her body sticky. She's dragging the relics of her emotions down the street, which suggests that she's carrying some burden with her, whether it be emotional or physical.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase 'burn out', suggesting that the woman is living life to excess and may not be able to sustain the pace at which she's living. The song speaks of 'backward glances', implying that she may have regrets about her past. The final lines convey a sense of despair and exhaustion, as the song speaks of 'biotes D'ennui' (boredom in life) and 'boites D'envie' (boxes of desire). The song suggests that the woman is caught in a cycle of desire and boredom, and that this is the sum total of her existence.
