RIP
A Wilhelm Scream Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fuck genius. What's an artist? Dead words devoid of meaning. Let's drop them.
I know where they can go, but your neck is blocking the hole. Let's start from zero.
Now, listen close.
This is a rip: "The scream that ignites the world?"
We're slaves to radios. We're not worth shit to talk to.
This is the pen that won't cauterize the wound. Whose plan to follow?
It feels like your own. It's an insult. You've fallen for it.
It feels like your own. It's your anthem, as jaded as its source.
The anemic. The pale, the sullen. An albumis evidence. I believed that shit.
Here, stuck in radios. No one's worth shit to talk to. These were my heroes.
Now they're all jokes.
This is a rip. 'The scream that ignites the world?"
We're slaves to radios. We're not worth shit to talk to.
This is the pen that won't cauterize the wound. Whose plan to follow?
It feels like your own. Itis an insult. You've fallen for it.
It feels like your own. It's your anthem, as jaded as its source.
The ceiling is waiting.
And you follow like it mattered if you did.
And it dropped you on your head 'cause you took yourself for granted.
Heartless and headstrong. Jump right over the bodies. Life's a race. It's an obstacle course.
Hide, but you'll never have a choice when you go.
They would have noticed you if they had known, but you're fucked.
They'll only love you when you're gone,
or barely hanging on to all your organs and dignity while you're rotting in hospitals.
Don't believe it? It's not your fault. You're just worthless. You're one in a million.
Where is god? The ornament,
the holiday song whored out on reading materials in latrines and porta-johns?
Don't believe this.

You're not worthless. It's us against millions and we can't take them all.
But we can take them on.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to A Wilhelm Scream's song The Rip express a feeling of disillusionment with the music industry and the idea of hero worship. The opening lines criticize the concept of the "artist" and suggest that it is a meaningless term that should be discarded. The singer then goes on to criticize the music industry and its power to control and manipulate its audience, referring to listeners as "slaves to radios" who are "not worth shit to talk to." The chorus of the song contains the line "This is a rip: 'The scream that ignites the world?'" which appears to be a sarcastic reference to a common music industry trope of the "screaming fan" who is supposedly inspired and moved by a particular artist or song.

This is the pen that won't cauterize the wound. Whose plan to follow?
The current methods of expression are not enough to heal society's wounds. We need a new plan to change things.

It feels like your own. It's an insult. You've fallen for it.
The music industry's cookie-cutter approach makes us feel like we are the ones creating the art, but in reality, it is an insult to our intelligence and creativity.

It feels like your own. It's your anthem, as jaded as its source.
The music industry's manufactured songs are marketed and sold to us as our own, but they are ultimately cynical and jaded in their origin.

The anemic. The pale, the sullen. An album is evidence. I believed that shit.
We have been convinced that the bleak and lifeless music being produced is evidence of artistic depth and meaning, and we have fallen for this lie.

Here, stuck in radios. No one's worth shit to talk to. These were my heroes. Now they're all jokes.

Trying to hide from the oppressive system is pointless because they will always have power over you. Even if you have something valuable to offer, you may go unnoticed because of the system's inherent flaws.

They'll only love you when you're gone, or barely hanging on to all your organs and dignity while you're rotting in hospitals.
The music industry only values artists when they are dead or suffering, reducing their art to a commodity rather than a reflection of their humanity.

Don't believe it? It's not your fault. You're just worthless. You're one in a million.
The industry's lies are not your fault - they have convinced millions of people that their art is worthless and formulaic, reducing individuality and creativity to a statistic.

Where is god? The ornament, the holiday song whored out on reading materials in latrines and porta-johns?
The concept of a higher power has been degraded and commercialized, reduced to a cheap holiday gimmick and plastered on low-brow reading materials.

Don't believe this. You're not worthless. It's us against millions and we can't take them all. But we can take them on.
Don't believe the lies of the industry - you are not worthless, and together we can challenge and change the damaging status quo, though the odds may be stacked against us.
