Born in Brooklyn, New York, she was raised in Detroit, Michigan, where she attended Detroit School of Performing Arts.

She first gained recognition at the age of 10, when she appeared on the television show Star Search and performed in concert alongside Gladys Knight. At the age of 12, Aaliyah signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records. She released her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number the album sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry.

Aaliyah worked with record producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott for her second album, One in a Million, which sold three million copies in the United States and more than eight million copies worldwide. In 2000, Aaliyah appeared in her first film, Romeo Must Die. She contributed to the film's soundtrack, which spawned the single "Try Again". The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay, making Aaliyah the first artist in Billboard history to achieve this goal. After completing Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah filmed her role in Queen of the Damned, and released, in 2001, her self-titled third and final studio album, which topped the Billboard 200. Unfortunately, the 22 year old singer's life was tragically cut short in a 2001 plane crash after filming her video for "Rock The Boat" in The Bahamas.

Aaliyah became famous in her own right during the mid-1990s with several hit records from the songwriting/production team of Missy Elliott and Timbaland, and their associate Steve "Static" Garrett. Notable for recording several hit singles, including "One in A Million" and "Try Again", Aaliyah has sold over 32 million records total worldwide, including posthumous releases. Two posthumous albums have been released since Haughton's death: I Care 4 U in December 2002, and Ultimate Aaliyah in April 2005, the latter of which was released as a box set that included her greatest hits and a documentary on her life. Haughton also ventured outside of music, modeling for Tommy Hilfiger and starring in two motion pictures (Romeo Must Die & Queen of The Damned) before her untimely death.

As a former GA charter pilot, you're climbing aboard the lowest bidder. All GA charter companies are dodgy, they have to be to be competitive and there is no quality assurance oversight beyond regulators. Easy to get a third party to take care of that and pilots get told to do it or someone else will. The only good charter companies are ones with long term resource industry or government contracts.

I work for one of those GA operators, and I have been for a number of years now, both in a leading position on the ground as well as in the cockpit.
Yes there are shady companies, but regulators, the civil aviation authority and internal safety and compliance measures make sure far more than 90% of us GA operators fly within specs and to a commonly accepted safety level.

I've been in the music business for over 40 years. Much of the every day decision making, logistics, etc is insane. According to the coroner and it matches FAA investigative reports, she likely did not regain consciousness before the plane crash. I remembered when this happened and have seen a lot of individuals discussing the tragedy. But I don’t recall ever hearing about the fact that she was drugged and carried onto the flight. Had to have been one of the two men. Bodyguard absolutely failed in his duties, even if he wasn’t the one to carry her aboard. The fact that she hadn’t willingly gotten on the plane makes this tragedy even worse.

That was my first thought, too. Based on this version of the story, the bodyguard was negligent. I understand the pressure he was under from the others who were eager to get moving, but still... On the other hand, it's hard to believe that they were all willing to carry their employer, unconscious, onto an airplane she didn't want to get on. Perhaps, there's more to the story...

@@Pretty_karma - well there is only 1 lady aside from Aaliyah, so the math is at least one or more of the people escorting Aliyah on the flight was a man, since it is literally IMPOSSIBLE for a woman to carry 120 lb-ish Aaliyah from the car, 10+ meters or more across the tarmac (the vehicle has to be parked away from the plane) up the steps of the aircraft and through the narrow doors... but i'm sure you already know this.

@@augustdaye2746 This sounds really sketchy. This whole thing looks like a setup designed to blame the pilot. Speculation at the time is she ran afoul of someone powerful and/or satanic. The owner may have been paid off, told the pilot that he was flying the other plane with more capacity, and messed up the engine mixture to guarantee that plane couldn’t get airborne.. Of all the pilots mistakes, his worst mistake was he was bad at math and it got them all killed. He was probably skilled and sober enough but failing to balance the plane meant he didn’t have the nose authority to level the plane so after crossing V2 he was doomed. Plus the fact she was terrified to get on the plane shows she sensed they were all in danger.

Agreed. And the worry that this dead "bodyguard " had for her post crash was just as tragic. He allowed her to be drugged into unconsciousness. And probably was the one to carry her on to the plane. The TV series Mayday covered that. The airline was growing too fast and hired any pilot they could find. Captain Hans Lutz was a real idiot, once did a sight seeing trip over Italy until one of the passengers noticed they were in Austria. The first officer called for a go-around when landing, Lutz ignored him and flew the plane straight into the ground.

I remember this all too well because a close friend of mine, who used to be a singer (at the time of Aaliyah's death) was crying her eyes out when she found out.

After learning about what happened, I was incredibly angry because her entourage demanded to fly on that day. Apparently some other pilots heard the pilot arguing with the entourage and had he not had alcohol and drugs in his system, he could have said "no". But, then the entourage would have filed a complained and the pilot would have been found out. That must have been on his mind. It doesn't make any sense why he'd agree to fly in a smaller aircraft knowing that the aircraft was too small.

I've met a few 'A' listers and they're always down-to-Earth and polite. However, their friends and companions seem to think they're the best thing since sliced bread and act liked spoiled brats. Due to that, a beautiful singer was killed. It really angers me.

Aaliyah did not take care of herself! The “responsibility” (not blame, which is how a child deals with reality and how the world operates today) ultimately falls upon her. She hired all involved and if she gave them the power to make these decisions, the responsibility lies with her. If they did ignore her wishes, responsibility still falls on her……she kept these people on her team and I’m sure this was not the first time they ignored her wishes. Very sad scenario and need to include pilot who also allowed himself to be pushed around into attempting that flight.

@@asya9493 As I recall, the pilot argued with them about all the heavy equipment they were bringing along with them. Maybe the pilot thought he was transporting 8 people, and one had to sit in the co pilots seat. Not ideal, but doable. Not making excuses for the pilot, but maybe he didn't anticipate (2) 300 pounders and 600 lbs of speakers and technical gear that I understand was included. ( Pretty sure the pilot was not trying to expire that day as well, and probably didn't expect what confronted him. He did as reported fight with the crew about being overweight before relenting.

One of the first things they taught me in flight school, maybe THE first thing, was DON'T OVERLOAD THE TAIL! The nose won't drop in a stall like it's supposed to. The plane falls tail-down, passengers and cargo fall to the back, making things even worse, you go into a tailspin, and you can't pull out of it. Everybody dies. That's basic stuff.

What’s shocking to me as a manager of multiple chartered fixed wing machines is how many times these completely illegal operators get found out in tragedies and how few we hear about getting caught on the ground before they kill their pax - what’s amazing to me is how difficult it is to cut even a single corner but operators like this leave no corner uncut and get away with it until people die. I recall that in the initial days after this accident the story going around was that the pilot was pressured by Aaliyah and her team to fly the plane even when it was clearly past it's weight limitations. This initially put the most of the blame on Aaliyah and her team for "coercing" the pilot into flying in such a condition. Also I recall seeing some commentaries regarding what happened which again suggested that Aaliyah and her team should have listened to the pilot instead of being in a rush to get to where they where going. Now some decades after the crash -- the truth actually comes out that Aaliyah had nothing to do with the pressure being put on the pilot to fly. And in actuality Aaliyah had sense enough to refuse to fly -- but was forced to fly because she was drugged. In every way possible poor decisions made by everyone else aside from Aaliyah resulted in the tragedy. SMH.

I had no idea about any of this… thought it was just weight and that someone from her team argued to ignore it. I didn’t know she was carried on to the plane passed out, either. That’s even scarier; but at least she died in her sleep? She was so pretty and had such an amazing voice. I also didn’t know some people survived the crash originally, awful way to go…

Thank you for this debrief. The early details of the crash and what lead up to it were very wrong and for the longest time I thought Aliyah was the one insisting on bringing all the bags with her and going forward with the flight.

I have 2 friends that were supposed to be on that flight back to Miami. They were bumped because Aaliyah's team wanted to get back faster and they took that plane. They said the entourage insisted on taking all the luggage even though they knew the plane was overweight. My friends watched the plane crash at the end of the runway. So sad and so avoidable.

What a coincidence. Apparently everyone in this comment section was either supposed to be on this flight or knew someone that was supposed to be on this flight. Apparently it was the most booked flight in the history of aviation.

It's called pencil whipping a logbook. I don't buy that 1100 hours seven months after he took his check rides for the commercial instrument and multi. I only had my logbook audited once in my 47 years of flying professionally, with the FAA, when I did my Airline Transport Certificate. The rest of the time, no, but you can tell in 10 minutes of flying if you are who you say you are. There is no way he could have ever flown that much in that short of time with a freshly issued Commercial Certificate. There is a reason why here in the states well take new pilots and make them flight instructors., you really learn the skill when you teach the skill. It's like learning a language, to learn that language through repetition. You can tell which pilots have been flight instructors and the ones that have not. This one really bugs me. I have seen a lot of stupid things in my career, but nothing as criminal as this one. The pilot in question should never have been there in the first place; as for the Owner, why he is not in Prison should be the real question to ask. I doubt that the airplane was even in annual. Not letting the FAA have access to the airplane logs is telling enough. You can do things on an airplane that is inop, but you have to have a Minimum Equipment List drawn up for the airplane. Telling you what you can and can not defer maintenance on and for how long. I hope my comment gives you a better understanding as to what was happening here. Hoover is really good, but glosses over the flight time business.

@@GeorgeSemel question wouldn’t nowadays that not be possible to fake your hours? I mean I’m not a pilot, I’m also not a trucker, but I have a friend that’s a trucker and he told me that over a decade ago they went to computer for their log hours as a lot of truckers and companies were lying on paper forms so they could continue driving longer to make more money to be able to track the local police departments surely there’s something similar that the FAA could implement for planes where it would be physically impossible for a pilot to lie about their flight time or how long they’ve been flying even that week or day or month

I remember when this happened, it didn't get a lot of news coverage beyond "Aaliyah was killed in a crash" I also remember the media blamed her saying she acted like a diva and insisted that the flight be overloaded when the Pilot told her that there were too many passengers and too much luggage for the flight to take place.

Aaliyahs passing was such a tragedy, She was literally in the beginning stages of filming “the matrix” and had just wrapped up the vampire film, “The queen of the Damned” so, in addition to her music, she was definitely becoming a movie star as well. *Sidenote, I always heard rumors that she was supposedly to booked on one of the hijacked planes of 9/11, which occurred a couple of weeks after her death. I don’t know if this is true, but that would’ve be crazy if it were

It has been said that this was a deliberate act. That she was meant to be "sacrificed". But then how can that be done? It definitely seems like an accident caused by negligence, without there being any deliberate attempt at getting her killed

Both Mark Wahlberg and Seth McFarlane were supposed to be on Flight 11. Wahlberg however made brain dead comments after the fact saying if he was on the plane the hijackers wouldn't have succeeded. Bro needs to remember he isn't actually the characters he plays in movies.

Who was there to confirm the conversation of not wanting to board the plane?
If there was someone else there, did they know about aviation safety and if so why would they not have been involved in that discussion.
How can a plane land or takeoff without there being someone there that knows at least the bare minimum about aviation safety? If a random person is able to see there’s an issue, why isn’t there someone in the building that could have spotted the same simple problem.
