He began performing at age six, and appeared in films such as Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging and The Illusionist before graduating to starring roles in films such as Nowhere Boy, in which he played John Lennon, and the superhero movie Kick-Ass.
Johnson was born 13 June 1990 in Holmer Green, Buckinghamshire, England, the son of a homemaker mother and a civil engineer father. It was announced on 31 October 2009, that Johnson was engaged to filmmaker Sam Taylor-Wood, his director on Nowhere Boy. As of January 2010, Taylor-Wood is pregnant with the couple's first child.
Johnson began acting at the age of 6, performing as the son of Macduff alongside Rufus Sewell’s Macbeth in 1999, and in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons in 2000. His TV roles have included his turn as Niker in the BBC's 2004 adaptation of the novel Feather Boy and Owen in the E4 series, Nearly Famous. In 2003, Johnson appeared as a young Charlie Chaplin in Shanghai Knights. In 2006, Johnson appeared in The Illusionist, appearing in the flashback scenes in the beginning of the film as Edward Norton's character as a teenager, Eduard Abramovicz. The scenes show the young Eduard as he first learns magic, and to do this, Johnson himself learned how to perform the ball trick displayed by his character. He also learned how to perform the balancing of the egg on the stick, although that was effected mechanically. Johnson subsequently appeared as the heartthrob in the 2008 teen comedy Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, Lorimer Black in Armadillo, and Prosper in The Thief Lord.
Johnson appeared as John Lennon in the 2009 biopic Nowhere Boy, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood. In 2010, Johnson appeared as Dave Lizewski, the lead character in Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman's film Kick-Ass, based on the superhero comic book of the same name by Mark Millar, and will appear as the central character in Chatroom, directed by Hideo Nakata.

Oh Maggie, Maggie May, they have taken her away
And she'll never walk down Lime street anymore
Well, that judge he guilty found her, for robbin' a homeward–bounder
You dirty, robbin' no good Maggie May
Now, I was paid off at the Pool, in the port of Liverpool
Well, three pound ten a week, that was my pay
With a pocket full of tin, I was very soon taken in
By a gal with the name of Maggie May
Now, the first time I saw Maggie, she took my breath away,
She was cruising up and down in Canning Place
She had a figure so divine, her voice was so refined
Well, being a sailor I gave chase
Now, in the morning I awoke, I was flat and stony broke
No jacket, trousers, waistcoat did I find
Oh, and when I asked her, where? She said, "My very dear sir,
They're down in Kelly's pawnshop number nine"
To the pawnshop I did go, no clothes there did I find
And the police, they took that gal away from me
And the judge he guilty found her of robbin' a homeward-bounder
She'll never walk down Lime Street anymore
Oh Maggie, Maggie May, they have taken her away
And she'll never walk down Lime street anymore
Well, that judge he guilty found her, for robbin' a homeward–bounder
You dirty, robbin' no good Maggie May

I love the details in the movie. At 01:25 you can see the man who takes a photograph of John and the Quarrymen. This photograph really exists!

Nowhere Boy should have a sequel reuniting Aaron Taylor-Johnson as John Lennon, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Paul McCartney and Sam Bell to reprise their roles of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison as well as new cast members Jed Elliott as Ringo Starr, Chelcee Grimes as Cilla Black and Rupert Grint as Brian Epstein.
