were laid spread out before me as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed
Has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
shade beneath the clouds
Of what was everything?
Oh, the pictures seared all been washed in black,
Tattooed everything...
I take a walk outside
I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter,
So why do I sear?
and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures seared all been washed in black,
tattooed everything...
All the love gone bad
Turned my world to black
Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be...yeah...
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be the sun
In somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine...
The song "Black" by Aaron Lewis is a poignant reflection on lost love and the pain of memories that continue to haunt. The opening lines, "Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay. were laid spread out before me as her body once did", set the stage for an introspective journey through what was once a deeply meaningful connection. The singer's love for this woman was all-encompassing, his soul revolving around her in much the same way the earth orbits the sun. But now, the memories of this love have taken a bitter turn, as the taste of the air around him has changed, and the pictures that were once so vibrant have been washed in black, leaving nothing but a tattooed impression on his psyche.
The second half of the song takes on a more frenzied tone, as the singer walks outside and is confronted by the joyous sounds of children playing. Here, the contrast between his own anguish and the carefree playfulness of the children highlights the loss and loneliness he feels. As the sun drops away, he cradles broken glass in his hands, symbolizing the shattered remnants of a love that was once all-encompassing.
Overall, "Black" is a powerful meditation on the pain of lost love and the intense memories that continue to linger long after the relationship has ended. It is a song that speaks to the human experience of love and loss, and reminds us that even the most beautiful relationships can ultimately fade away.
