Aaron Neville Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see
Aaron Neville's rendition of "Amazing Grace" is a deeply emotional and powerful interpretation of this classic hymn. The song starts with the iconic line "Amazing Grace how sweet the sound," which sets the tone for the entire song. The lyrics speak to the transformative power of grace in the singer's life, as the melody gently glides through a range of emotions, from humility to gratitude to hopefulness.
The lyrics capture the idea that grace can overcome any obstacle, even the deepest sense of despair and hopelessness. They reveal a sense of darkness that the singer has found themselves in and the subsequent redemption they found through grace. The line, "That saved a wretch like me!" stands out as a poignant expression of the singer's self-realization of past mistakes and need for forgiveness. The hymn tells a story of salvation, and through the weighty, soulful conviction in Neville's voice it becomes clear that the singer has indeed been saved by grace.

This is not close to a good version. This in no way compares to the accapella version of Judy Collins. Collins " owns" Amazing Grace.
