Going Home
Aaron Neville Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Going home, going home
I'm just going home
Quiet light, some still day
I'm just going home

It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
Going to fear no more

Mother's there expecting me
Father's waiting, too
Lots of folk gathered there
All the friends I knew
All the friends I knew

I'm going home
Nothing's lost, all's gain
No more fret nor pain
No more stumbling on the way
No more longing for the day

Going to roam no more
Morning star lights the way
Restless dream all done
Shadows gone, break of day
Real life begun

There's no break, there's no end
Just a living on
Wide awake with a smile
Going on and on
Going home, going home

I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
I am going home
I'm just going home

Going home, going home
Going home, going home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics for Aaron Neville's "Going Home" are a poignant reflection on the inevitability of death and the comfort of returning Home after a long journey. The song is not meant to be mournful or sad, but rather a celebration of a life well-lived and a hope for a peaceful end. The lyrics invite the listener to imagine a quiet, tranquil day where they are free from the stress and uncertainty of the world, and can return to a place where they are expected and welcomed with open arms.

The opening lines of the song set the stage for this journey, with the singer stating that they are "just going home." There is a sense of finality here, as if the journey has reached its natural conclusion and there is no need for further struggle or effort. The second verse provides more detail about what the singer expects to find when they arrive Home, with "mother" and "father" waiting for them, as well as "lots of folk" who knew and loved them in life. There is a sense of community and belonging here, as if the singer is returning to a place where they are deeply loved and missed.

The final verse of the song is perhaps the most hopeful and joyful, as the singer imagines a life free from pain and struggle, with "real life begun." There is a sense of awakening here, as if the struggles and hardships of life are finally over and the true, everlasting life can begin. The final lines of the song, "Going home, going home, I'm just going home," are both a conclusion and a reassurance, telling the listener that everything is going to be okay and that Home is waiting for them.

Tears down my eyes, why? Don't know what's a love from father figure, mother just fed me, dressed me and that's about it. Been on my own since 16 to face life as a kid. The world can be a very nasty place. People can be mean folks. Family unity, that's just pipe dream. If I can get a dollar for the time I wish to have a normal life, childhood like anybody else. I be well of. Still all of the above doesn't stop me from been a kind person to others and offer. Songs like this really pot me on the edge. Day dreaming about make a difference on someone life for the better. So they don't have to be like me or go through what have been. I will never wish anyone my life. Is not that bad. I'm ok financially, but that doesn't meant anything to me. Thanks Aron for sharing your talent. You give me joy in your music. Thanks

When you have had that love and lost it all, is very hard. I miss my parents very much. Good people who passed too soon. I have the Lord to tell my troubles and my joys to . This helps, but I wish my folks were still here. In my mind I imagine I'm "Going Home" and they are there waiting. It will happen one day but not yet.
