Oh Holy Night
Aaron Neville Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear savior's birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!
Oh hear the angel voices
Oh night divine
Oh night when christ was born
Oh night divine
Oh night divine
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here come the wise men from orient land
The king of kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our friend.
Truly he taught us to love one another
His law is love and his gospel is peace
Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother
And in his name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise his holy name.
In Aaron Neville's rendition of "Oh Holy Night," the lyrics encompass the acceptance of the Messiah through hope and joy. The verse that sets the tone mentions the beginning of Jesus's life, with descriptive words such as the "stars are brightly shining" as it "is the night of dear savior's birth!" Throughout the remainder of the verse, it describes the world as it "lay in sin and error pining" and how it was weary and hopeless. However, the presence of the savior brought worth and hope to the soul. In the chorus, there is a call to worship the night that Christ was born, and to fall to our knees to hear the angel's voices.
The second verse describes the arrival of the wise men or "Magi" who visited the Infant in Bethlehem after following the guidance of the shining star. It describes the humble beginning of Jesus, born in a lonely manger, and serves as a reminder that even in his birth, he was born to become a friend to all people. The final verse highlights the teachings of Jesus to love and to embrace peace. It suggests that the song is a call to action where individuals must strive to recognize the value of love and peace by breaking down the barriers of oppression.
