One Fine Day
Aaron Neville Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And you will know our love was, meant to be
One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl
The arms I long for, will open wide
And you'll be proud to have me, right by your side
One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl
Though I know you're the kind of boy
Who only wants to run around
You'll come to me when you want to settle down,
Oh!
One fine day, we'll meet once more
And then you'll want the love you threw away before
One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl
One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl
Aaron Neville's "One Fine Day" speaks of a hopeful and patient love, conveyed through the lyrics of a woman waiting for the man she loves to realize that they were meant to be together. The opening lines, "One fine day, you'll look at me, and you will know our love was meant to be" carry a message of waiting for the right time and the right person, but also that love is worth waiting for. She then goes on to say that "you're gonna want me for your girl, the arms I long for will open wide, and you'll be proud to have me, right by your side" which shows the desire for the man's presence and also the hope that one day he will realize that he wants to be with her. The woman acknowledges that the man is not ready to settle down, but she will keep waiting for him because she truly believes that they are meant to be together.
As the song progresses, the lyrics build towards a hopeful future where they will meet once more and he will want the love that he threw away before. The repetition of "One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl" further emphasizes the woman's unwavering hope and belief that their love will be realized someday. The song beautifully captures the essence of a hopeful and patient love, one that believes in the power of destiny.
