Closure
Ab-Soul (feat. Jhene Aiko) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I called you back I'm glad you didn't answer baby
'Cause every-time we talk I always feel the static baby
Could be the distance, yeah
You spoke the truth into existence to degrade yourself
Told me keep it G as if you told yourself
Knew that I was on the move
I got to prove my theories to be true
I know it's getting hard to think about me
I know it's hard to see me on the TV
I know you wish you never met me
I liked you better when you didn't like me
Things just ain't the same no more
Things just ain't the same no more
Still think about you everyday
And I wish I could stay
But things just ain't the same no more

I don't regret a second that we shared, hell no
In fact I often wish that you was here, right now, ow, ow
Cause' when Lori left me you was right there
Lord knows you had the right care
I wonder if you still praying to the East
I wonder if you ever forgave me

I know it's getting hard to think about me
I know it's hard to see me on the TV
I know you wish you never met me
I liked you better when you didn't like me
Things just ain't the same no more
Things just ain't the same no more
Still think about you everyday
And I wish I could stay
But things just ain't the same no more

I know I said it'll be just one time
But it felt so good that I came back twice
And I take full blame
But in this world of selfish men

You keep your heart inside your chest
And not in someone else's hand

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of “Closure,” Ab-Soul is reflecting on a past relationship that seems to have ended on rocky terms. He feels that every time the two of them communicate, there is always “static,” indicating that their interactions are negative and stressful. Ab-Soul suspects that the source of their issues could be distance-related, and it appears that his former partner may have been struggling with self-esteem, as she degraded herself and advised him to “keep it G.” However, Ab-Soul is primarily focused on the present and his own goals, explaining that he needs to “prove my theories to be true,” suggesting that he doesn’t have time for a relationship right now.

The chorus of the song acknowledges the difficulties of moving on from a past relationship. Ab-Soul recognizes that his former partner may feel hurt when seeing him on TV or when thinking about him, but he can’t go back to how things were. He reflects on feeling differently about his partner when she didn’t reciprocate his feelings, implying that the intensity of their relationship caused problems. Even though he thinks about his former partner every day, he can’t change how things are now.

In the second verse, Ab-Soul seems to have deeper feelings for his ex-partner, as he admits to wishing she was with him during a difficult time in his life. He acknowledges that she was there for him when he needed someone and wonders if she still prays. However, he still recognizes that mistakes have been made, and he wonders if he has been forgiven.

Walker Johnson I think his album was really disappointing.. but this track right here is fucking magnificent! I know a lot of straight hip hop heads are hating on it though. I mostly just feel sorry for them, so much emotion in this song.
