Waterloo
Abba Revival Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My my
At Waterloo Napoleon did surrender
Oh yeah
And I have met my destiny in quite a similar way
The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

My my
I tried to hold you back, but you were stronger
Oh yeah
And now it seems my only chance is giving up the fight
And how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to
Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

So how could I ever refuse
I feel like I win when I lose
Waterloo - I was defeated, you won the war
Waterloo - Promise to love you for ever more
Waterloo - Couldn't escape if I wanted to

Waterloo - Knowing my fate is to be with you
Waterloo - Finally facing my Waterloo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Abba Revival Band’s song Waterloo tell a story of defeat, surrender, and destiny in a unique way. The song is about a person who met their “Waterloo” - a metaphorical term that means a final, decisive defeat; in the same way that Napoleon was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo. The singer tells the story of how they tried to hold back their lover, but ultimately their love was stronger and they had to give up the fight. The lyrics suggest that despite the defeat, the singer feels like they win when they lose because they have found their destiny by being with their lover.

The use of historical events and references in the song is interesting because it adds another layer of meaning to the lyrics. It suggests that the singer’s “Waterloo” is also a historic moment in their life, and that their defeat was inevitable. The line “the history book on the shelf is always repeating itself” underscores this idea, that the same patterns of love and defeat repeat throughout history. Furthermore, the repetition of the chorus adds to the overall message of the song, which is that destiny is inescapable and that defeat can often lead to a greater victory.

If it was possible to sound like this live, then lots of groups would sound this good. As much as i agree that this band does it well, they also use a lot of pre-recorded studio work. It sounds fantastic. just too fantastic to be true unfortunately. But i agree, they have done what they have done very well.
