After his parents divorced, his mother had to care for him and his six brothers and sisters. He started a tumultuous life of delinquency and eventually religious activism very close to extremism, on the other hand he had a very successful school life (he studied philosophy and classical literature at the Université des Sciences Humaines de Strasbourg) as well as a national artistic career (with the rap group N.A.P in which he's the lead rapper).
Discovering Sufism, a mystic tradition within Islam, he broke with extremism and became a defender of peace and of the "Vivre Ensemble" (Living Together) movement, whilst becoming officially, in 1999, a disciple of the Moroccan Spiritual Grand Master Sidi Hamza Al Qadiri Boutchichi.
In 2003, he travelled to Auschwitz, with a multi-faith delegation including many Palestinian Muslims, after the call of Arabic Israeli Emile Shoufani.
In 2004, he released his first solo album "Le Face à Face Des Coeurs" (Atmosphériques/Universal) and his first book "Qu'Allah Bénisse La France" (Albin Michel) was unanimously welcomed by critics (he was awarded the Laurence Trân Prize in Belgium) .
In June 2006 he released his new album "Gibraltar" which was awarded the Prix Constantin in November.

Abd Al Malik Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
He's so much better than he knows
I know he goes to trouble
Fighting in this jungle
From one failure to the next
When he stares into space
I can see I can feel his pain
Trying to drag him
But my Baby is a hero no matter what he shows
He's so much better than he knows
I know he goes to trouble
Fighting in this jungle
My life without him will be meaningless
My Baby is a hero no matter what he shows
He's so much better than he knows
I know he goes to trouble
Fighting in this jungle
From one failure to the next
When he stares into space
I can see I can feel his pain
Trying to drag him
So far out far out from me
But my Baby is a hero no matter what he shows
He's so much better than he knows
I know he goes to trouble
Fighting in this jungle
My life without him will be meaningless
Et si tu ne te reconnais pas
Comment me reconnaitrais-tu?
The lyrics of Abd Al Malik feat. Wallen’s song “Mon amour” reflect on the struggles and pain of a partner who is a hero despite his failures and mistakes. The singer acknowledges the troubles that her partner faces in his life, constantly fighting in the “jungle” of his struggles. She sees the pain in his eyes when he stares into space, and tries to pull him back to her. The song talks about the complexities of a relationship and how love can make someone a hero even when they don't realize it themselves. The chorus talks about how the singer's life would be meaningless without her partner, solidifying the importance of their relationship.
The second verse of the song addresses the theme of self-recognition and recognition of each other. It asks the question of whether we recognize ourselves when we see what we have become. The lyrics reflect on how sometimes, our own obsessions can overshadow our growth as individuals and how our faults can be difficult to acknowledge. The song concludes with the questioning of the world itself and whether it can function without us and our relationships.
Overall, “Mon Amour” touches on the importance of love, relationships, and recognizing the struggles of each other, while acknowledging the complexities of life, and the world we live in.

And if you don't recognize me
If you don't acknowledge or appreciate me,
Do you recognize yourself when you see what we've become
Do you see yourself reflected in what we've achieved and how we've changed?
And if you say you can't recognize yourself in my image
If you reject or deny my identity and self-expression,
It's because the darkness of your gaze clouds our light
Your negativity and criticism obscures our positivity and brilliance.
So every night when I sing, it's not just me, it's everyone else
My art and creativity express the thoughts and feelings of many people, not just myself.
I know it's not so simple to admit your faults
I understand that it's difficult to acknowledge and take responsibility for your mistakes.
The world is made this way, isn't it
Our society and culture reinforce these patterns and structures of behavior.
But can it really exist without us
Despite its flaws, can the world continue to function and thrive without our contributions and presence?
Can it really exist without you?
And without you specifically?
And if you don't recognize yourself
And if you struggle to see and understand your own identity and purpose,
How could you recognize me?
How could you possibly understand and appreciate me?
What happened to us?
What led us to become so distant and disconnected from each other?
That we ended up like strangers
To the point where we feel like we don't even know each other anymore.
We relied too much on our egos
Our pride and self-centeredness caused us to lose sight of what was truly important.
We are forever Adam and Eve
Our fundamental human nature includes flawed and vulnerable aspects, just like the first humans in the Bible.
Hearts break and slowly accumulate
The pain of past emotional wounds builds up and perpetuates over time.
The world is made this way, isn't it
Again, societal norms and expectations inform and shape our behaviors and interactions.
But can it really exist without us
Once again questioning the necessity of our existence and involvement in the world.
Can it really exist without you?
And, more specifically, without your unique contributions to the world.
