Black Day
Abney Park Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see the world with my eyes open
I see the world through lidless eyes
I see a world that is sick with self-loathing
Nothing in the nothing to mystify

Black day, black night
Flesh is burnt us under in the broad daylight
Black day, black night
And the devil's softly singing through the thick of the fight

I see the world in sinking depression
I see the world in a stinking digression
No chance for heaven we're already in hell
And the devil's taking over at the ring of his bell

Black day, black night
Flesh is burnt us under in the broad daylight
Black day, black night
And the devil's softly singing through the thick of the fight

(Repeat all)
I see the world

Overall Meaning

The song "Black Day" by Abney Park is a haunting and melancholic reflection on the state of the world. The lyrics use vivid imagery to convey a sense of despair and hopelessness. The first two lines, "I see the world with my eyes open, I see the world through lidless eyes," suggest that the singer is more aware of the harsh realities of life than others are, and that they cannot escape from these truths.

The next line, "I see a world that is sick with self-loathing," implies that the world is full of people who are unhappy with themselves and their lives. The word "sick" suggests that this self-loathing is a disease, something that is spreading and infecting everyone. The final line of this stanza, "nothing in the nothing to mystify," implies that there is no magic in the world, no sense of wonder or mystery, everything is just mundane and ordinary.

The chorus of the song, with its repetition of "black day, black night," emphasizes the darkness and hopelessness of the world that the singer sees. The line "Flesh is burnt us under in the broad daylight" suggests the violence and destruction that is happening all around them. The final line of the chorus, "And the devil's softly singing through the thick of the fight," adds to the sense of despair and futility, as it suggests that even the forces of evil are taking over.

The second verse continues this theme of despair, with the line "I see the world in sinking depression." The line "No chance for heaven we're already in hell" implies that things are so bad that there is no hope for improvement, and that the world is already as bad as it can be. The final line of the verse, "And the devil's taking over at the ring of his bell," suggests that even the most evil forces are gaining power and control.

Overall, "Black Day" is a powerful and evocative song that conveys a sense of hopelessness and despair. It suggests that the world is full of darkness and that things are only getting worse. The vivid imagery and repeating chorus make it a haunting and memorable piece of music.

I haven't listened to this song in at least a decade... And it hits harder now then it did then. Thank you for revisiting the classics!

@GreatSmithanon

Perfect song to revisit right now. It's long been one of my favorite Abney Park songs, and it fits the state of things very well. I'm laying in a hospital bed in the psych ward right now, here for depression related reasons, so this has a bit of extra meaning to me.

I'm so glad you're revisiting the old material, I've been praying for a re-recording of Change Cage in your Steampunk sound ever since you performed Stigmata Martyr on Off the Grid.
