Hush
Abney Park Lyrics

My comrades fell, as I defend,
The goals I set. My armies fled,
fell as they ran, trampled our dead.
Rush, back through the fields, I am hush,
All the ghosts of the dead are awake, I'm afraid
rise in my path to do me wrong.
As wars are fought, Armies abide.
Should I be tried,
For men who died?
Rush, back through the fields, I am hush,
All the ghosts of the dead are awake, I'm afraid
The lyrics of Abney Park's song Hush explore the psyche of a soldier who has been through years of war and witnessed the fall of his comrades. The first stanza describes his determination to defend the goals he set and his armies falling, as they ran over the dead. The second stanza descends deeper into the psyche of the soldier, as he experiences flashbacks of his fallen comrades, represented by ghosts who rise in his path to do him wrong. The last few lines question whether he should be held accountable for the deaths of his men, and the moral and psychological implications of war.
The chorus of the song "Rush, back through the fields, I am hush, all the ghosts of the dead are awake, I'm afraid", portrays the soldier as someone who is haunted by the ghosts of his fallen comrades, associates, and enemies. Through the lyrics, we see a soldier struggling with PTSD, trauma, and anxiety, portrayed via the imagery of ghosts who haunt him, sleepless nights, and a constant sense of fear.
Abney Park's song Hush is a powerful commentary on the effects of war on people, soldiers and civilians alike. It explores the human side of war, the psychological toll it takes, and the aftermath. The song is a commentary on war and the experiences of the soldiers who fought in it.
