Abomination Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Devil seeks my soul tries to steal my breath
Fits of anger cry out as I spill my guts
Vomit fills the air as the coffin shuts
[Chorus:]
Possession
Possession
[Repeat first verse]
[Chorus]
[The Lords Prayer]
Mine eyes have seen the glory
Of the coming of the dead
They have ripped my heart out
Stole my soul and took my every breath
I've lost the will to live or die
Or follow in his ways
His death is marching on
[Repeat first verse]
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Abomination's song "Possession" seem to be about a person who is trapped in an evil possession. The first verse suggests that the individual has died and was seemingly born into an "evil congregation." The devil seeks the person's soul and tries to take their breath away. The fits of anger presumably refer to the moments where the person is fighting back against possession, spilling their guts and vomiting as the coffin shuts. The repetition of the first verse emphasizes the feeling of being trapped and potentially helpless.
The chorus of the song is simply the word "possession" repeated twice in a haunting, ominous tone, further emphasizing the main theme of the song. The next verse refers to "The Lord's Prayer," a Christian prayer that is meant to protect against evil. However, the following lines suggest that it did not work as the person's eyes have seen the "glory of the coming of the dead." The dead have apparently ripped the person's heart out, stolen their soul, and taken every breath, leaving the person with no will to live or die. The final line speaks of the relentless march of death.
Overall, the song appears to be about the struggle against possession and evil, but ultimately succumbing to it. The haunting tones and viscous imagery create a sense of unease and foreboding as the lyrics describe the inevitability of possession and the trap that it creates.

I had this on cassette tape, "the red demo", I worked with Paul Speckman at Poplar Creek music theatre back in 87-88 when it was originally recorded. Still bad ass after all this time.
