In 2010 they broke up and formed the band Faith in Grace, but that band has since dissolved and About A Plane Crash is back! They are currently writing new material and a music video which will be released in the coming months.

Hello I'm from Uruguay and I had a meeting with one of the survivors where he told us the complete story.

I don't expect them to have all of the details but some important details are either wrong or missing.

One of the details he gave me about the rations was that by day 3 (I believe) they heard on the radio that the search and rescue party had found the location of the plane, so everyone started feasting on the food like there was no tomorrow. It turned out that the S&R party mistook the plane crash with another thing (I can't remember with what but they didn't have a clue where the plane actually was).

Also, a detail that they forgot to mention was that, both pilots, had made a mistake. They told the passangers that they had just flown over the city of Curicó, Chile when instruments were telling them otherwise. They mistook it with another city and thus when the survivors were trying to locate themselves, they assumed their position was elsewhere rather than where it actually was.

Another thing I remember was that when they decided to resort to eating the dead, they all had agreed that if one of them was to die, the rest could feed from the recently deceased survivor and they were to tell the story to their relatives.

Last, I recall him saying he didn't like the idea of flying on a Friday 13th, becasue he was superstitious and all.

One of the most interesting things about this story, is that the mother of one this players was the only one that strongly believed that her son was alive, even when more than 70 days passed. Every day she wore a flower to symbolize the life of her son.

And also one of the most difficult things that happened is that Fernando had to eat his mother and sister’s bodies. Although they ate the bodies they were extremely malnourished.

What made find them so difficult was that everybody thought that the plain crushed in Chile, but in fact it crushed in Argentina, and when they decided to walk to try to find some help, they went in the wrong direction and walked to Chile, which is longer.

Also, they still visit the man that found them in Chile .

Dude the story of the Chilean sheep herder who found them was definitely worth mentioning. His name was Sergio Catalan, he was with his son and when he understood the situation he threw bread and water across the river with a hopeful message. Then he rode his horse for hours to get them help. When he told police they called the rescue team to Santiago who at first didn't believe him, saying he was some drunk cowboy making up stories. He had to convince authorities his tale was real. Survivors visited him for years and some attended his funeral on 2020. He was hero, not some nameless person.

People who have likely never felt the feeling of TRUE starvation. Who like to say ‘Oh, I’m starving.’ and think they’re actually starving. I will admit, I’d be sad if a family member of mine was eaten… but I would try to block it out, work on my understanding. Sometimes it happens… it’s not pretty for either side, people are acting like the survivors enjoyed it because the dead couldn’t. I wouldn’t have a grudge against those who had to do it, I would be sad for everyone involved with just a little more sentimentality towards the one I knew personally who didn’t survive.

I also survived a plane crash in 2015, crashed at 94 mph and then plane exploded after. The pilot and I both caught on fire, hair melted, skin burned off on 70% of the body and broke every joint. I am nearing full recovery 5 years later and a living example you can truly heal from anything💜

Hi! I'm uruguayan and wanted to point something out. When the video says that Nando Parrado didn't knew that the small gesture of trading places with his friend would end up saving his life, it's because later after hitting the first mountain peak the plane broke in two *just behind that seat*, the one Nando was sitting on after giving his back seat so his friend could watch the Cordillera. If he had not, he would have flown away on his seat, and that is what happened to his friend.
Also, Roberto Canessa, who was 19 and a medical student at the time, was the first to make the cut through the human bodies so they could eat them, as he knew the human body well. He is now 66 years old and a cardiologist. He was and is saving human lives.

One of the survivors lives in my city, Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, near Uruguay. He is married with children and a new life. He hates to talk about the tragedy, rarely accepts to be interviewed. But when he does he always says the same thing: there was no other way to stay alive and he had chosen to live. That's says all.

This is actually one of the most incredible survival stories I’ve ever heard. So many awful things happen but their seemed to be a particular dynamic going on in this group that kept them all together. It never became about being in charge or ego, which we see in a lot of movies. I honestly just can’t hype this enough. It’s mind-blowing. I watched the movie (Alive, named after the book) and a documentary but still needed to know more so I read the book (Alive) that does a great, detailed job of the crash, the survivors and the efforts of family, friends and authorities made to attempt rescue missions. However, I still needed to know more from a personal memoir perspective, so someone recommended Miracle In The Andes by. Nando Parrado to me and that too was incredible.

It would’ve been a lot worse if they were a bunch of fat people traveling to a chocolate expo, a school class with children or something other than athletes 😅

Nevertheless, what a horrible experience for all of them. I can’t imagine how hopeless they must have felt with no sign of rescue :( They needed to become their own heroes and that’s what they did with extraordinary powers provided by survival mode! 💪

They weren't professional athletes, they were amateur rugby players. The team was formed by 19 former students of a Uruguayan school, most of them university students reunited to play a match organised by the captain (the other 21 passengers were relatives or friends who'd been invited to fill the plane and pay less for each ticket). Unlike what is shown in this video, there was no coach. Many of them were heavy smokers, and the ones who weren't started smoking heavily in the mountains because the only thing they had plenty of was cigarettes. Only 5 of the 16 survivors were members of the team, some of the others had previous medical conditions, and one is called 'Fat Francois' (btw he had to be sedated to return to Uruguay after the rescue, and has never got on a plane since). That's why they say 'it wasn't a matter of physical strength, in the Andes if you lost hope, you died'.

Most of the survivors give conferences around the world telling their survival story. Thirty years after the accident, they realised that their mission was to help people by sharing their heartwrenching experience, and saying that if they could, anyone can overcome the mountain(s) all of us have in our life. And they also give interviews, especially for the Latin American media.

I was already familiar with the story but hats off to all of the survivors. It must have been an experience that the rest of us can't even comprehend. Absolute courage and the will to survive went a long way. As horrible as it sounds, I don't see why eating the bodies is so taboo to some people, when the only other option is starvation you do what you have to. Hope that the survivors have never had to endure any more misery in their lives.

I am severely disappointed in the people that turned on the group when they confessed that they turned to cannibalism. They had no food! Eventhough it’s a tough and depressing decision, they HAD to eat their friends to survive. Matter of fact, the only person who did die was the one guy that didn’t resort to cannibalism. I know it’s a tough choice, but sometimes you have to eat other people to survive.

@Summer Kimberly If you are ever starving you'll think differently. I was in a situation where I had nothing but water for 5 or 6 days, and my mind started obsessing over food. I actually considered setting a trap in the yard and eating whatever was in it. I've never killed anything in my life, but I swear at that time, I could have ate a cat or dog. I managed to hold out until I was able to get away, but a few more days, I wouldn't have been able to control myself. There's very few people that would be able to deny food in any form when they are starving. I was there for 5-6 days. It was probably around day 4 that I seriously started obsessing.

If you've read the books, you know that Nando Parrado wasn't the leader (the leaders and strategists were the Strauch cousins), that the film 'Alive' is not the real story, as the survivors said, and that they got out of the mountains because all of them performed heroic actions.

My time in the US Army taught me that many people will have their opinions dispite the fact that none of these people have earned the right to judge me. These people did what they had to do to survive and as a fellow survivor I salute these people in finding that other side that keeps you alive. The "person" who rescued them his name is Sergio Catalan who was a herdsman and was on his horse when he found Nando and Roberto. He left his kids there to go back on his horse which took him 10 hours he did not stop to get to civilization and get help. The next day Sergio and the army went back to rescue.

This is my first time knowing about this story,and honestly, you can't really blame them for eating other human, escpesially that they eat the one that already died. For the very,very least,they're not killing unwilling survivor to eat them, and remember that option is their last resort. Thanks to that,they have enough strenght to live for another day.
Never understimate when human have their survival instinct kicked in.

It was an amateur rugby team formed by 16 former students of a Uruguayan school. Each one of them had invited 1 or 2 friends/relatives to fill the plane and pay less for each ticket. The crash happened at the end of the worst winter in the Andes in the last decades, so they were stranded at almost 4000 m.a.s.l. and -30°C.

On day 11, after hearing on a transistor radio that the search had been called off, three of them made an expedition with the hope of finding the batteries in the tail section to power up the radio and make an SOS call. Sadly, they got caught in a blizzard and returned the next day, physically and mentallly destroyed (one snow-blind). That's when they realised that trekking to get help at that time of year meant sure death. In fact, immediately after the crash, they'd seen a passenger be literally swallowed by the snow (his body was found on day 63, when the snow'd started melting).

So, while waiting for the arrival of summer, the whole group provided the final expeditionaries with the knowledge and the 'equipment' they'd need to deal with such a hostile environment.

very well told I believe, I´ve read the original book and have seen the movie (I prefer the book) but you have done a great job, telling the story in less than 15 minutes. The book also refers to search efforts by family members who just kept trying to find them, even after the authorities gave up.

-22F is freezing where I am from in Canada. I work outdoors, and you have to wear layers of clothing in an 8-10 hour day. To survive overnight, without being dressed for the elements would be a nightmare. Without food, warm clothing, and medical supplies, it's amazing anyone survived those conditions.

Yes but unfortunately numerous people seem to think that they should have attempted to walk out almost right away. In early spring when the crash happened the Andes was still covered in snow from a winter that had more snowfall than had been seen in decades. What’s not mentioned in the video is that they got the insulation from the tail they found about a month after the crash. By the time the sleeping bag was sewn together it was late spring and the snow had melted a fair bit plus the temperature had moderated enough that they had a chance. Btw, if you’re not aware, they made a movie about this incident in 1993 that was filmed in the Canadian Rockies not far from the Panorama ski resort. Weather permitting they would fly by helicopters every day shooting the movie scenes on a glacier. The actors experienced a small sampling of what those survivors went through. Nando was a consultant for it as well and often joined them on the glacier. The name of the movie is Alive starring Ethan Hawke.

For those saying "this should be a book or a movie" - this is both a book and a movie, it's called Alive and Ethan Hawke plays Nando Parrado. Nando, Roberto Canessa (who was a medical student), and some of the others have authored books as well.

When the survivors are asked about the film, they say that it's a very shallow adaptation of the story that doesn't instill what they really lived in the mountains. They find it disrespectful because the characters are not portrayed realistically, and call it 'the Disney version'.

My mother's Uruguayan, and had just turned 7 less than two weeks before the crash. She remembered the events well.

Years later, she managed to get into contact with one of the survivors, Javier Methol, whose wife Liliana was one of the crash survivors who died due to the avalanche. A year or two after initially writing to him, the Chilean Mine collapse and rescue of 2010 occurred, and once again she wrote to Methol about how similar these two events seemed. Methol replied that while there were similarities between the two, it wasn't the same, because the miners were underground in warm weather (and so food and water could be distributed downwards to the survivors until they could be rescued), but the crash survivors were up in the Andes with very little food and zero chance of salvation had it not been for Parrado and Canessa.

Javier Methol died in 2015, so far the only survivor who has since passed on.

I've been watching survivor stories reenacted by actors - I had nightmares and was traumatized. But these animated ones are a lot more palatable, help you appreciated the survivor's heroism without fixating on the trauma.

The deserve respect for making it through, to be loved to compliment the healing of their wounds, to be cherished and uplifted for doing what they had to do, the things they wouldn’t but because of the circumstances, the harsh decisions the last resort, not bashed but comforted after such a hard trial. I actually got my psych teacher to start using this in her curriculum bc the documentary was wild but at no point did we fault them they did what they felt was right . I PERSONALLY would choose death but they felt the need to stay alive and the way they did it was praying and taking it like eating the body so they didn’t feel as bad

I heard that since they were so close, they actually made a kind of pact after the crash, voted and that everyone agreed that if they die the others could eat their bodies. They were so close that they decided to sacrifice their rest of the dead to get the others to survive. If that’s not true companionship and friendship I don’t know what is.
Don’t know why people were angry with them. If I was in that situation and died by Hypothermia or Hunger or whatever, I too would want my friends to be able to eat my body so they don’t starve to death as well, because I love them.

Yes, they made this pact, but what makes this more remarkable is that most of them weren't close. The members of this amateur team had invited 1 or 2 friends/relatives to fill the plane and pay less for each ticket. So, after the crash many were just acquaintances or didn't even know each other, because their actual friends had died instantly. Some lost their best friends in the crash and in the avalanche. By the moment of the rescue, only 5 of the 16 survivors were rugby players.

For some extra info: the 36 (i think there was) men & woman had all headed out on a trip for football on Friday the 13th (no joke — i watched a news documentary about it and one of the men that actually survived the crash said they left on Friday the 13th) They were Italian men. One guy, who I believe was called Nando, lost both his mother and sister in the crash. on the second day, two planes flews over the Andes but none saw the survivors.

I cannot imagine having to do what they did. The emotions they went through, having to eat their loved ones like their friends/family to be able to survive. They were strong mentally, to be able to do that. They were smart too, having stitch up a blanket using wires.

I got to listen to Nando Parrado speak at a conference I went to a few years back; knowing the story and having watched the movie....it was completely different to hear it be recounted by one of the 2 that walked out to get help. Very chilling, and very humbling, but above all, very inspirational.

I read the book, they were not evil or anything like that they had a deep respect for each other and it was a huge barrier and burden for them to do what they did. They did not do these things because they wanted but because they had to.

I remember this. Poor people in that plane. Very sad. And yes I would of done the same to stay alive. They had no choice. Easy to point the finger and say it was bad but try thinking what these people people went through. I’m just glad some of them made it back to see their family and loved ones again.

Exactly. I bet majority would't act any different. Cannibalism isn't uncommon among people being stranded with no food at all. In some cases even sacrifice themselves or play a game where winner or loser is eaten if theres no dead bodies available.

Every time this story is brought up I’ve often noticed that the conversation will sometimes include: “You have permission to eat me if this ever happens to us.” Most people have no idea what it means to REALLY starve, including myself. So until they’re in that position they shouldn’t judge.

Ok just for the record the only reason they couldnt hook up the battery to the radio was because the batteries were 12v DC and the radio required 115v AC. One of the players was actually an amateur electrician enthusiast who was decently knowledgeable and probably could have fixed the radio if the batteries they found were right. They also unhooked the radio from the fuselage and not the batteries from the tail. They brought the radio to the batteries not the batteries to the radio.

What this video forgot to mention was that they (the team that made the hike) didnt have any way to keep their feet warm and dry. They all had soccer socks if that. So they made some, out of the elbow skin and fat of the dead.

Honestly this is an incredible story of a horrible disaster but also of survival. One of the parents of one player that died said something like this in an interview; "there were (however many they started with) so that helped the 16 to come home, back to us."

There is a film which is about a true story about a plane which was hit by a lightning bolt and it broke in half sending all people to the ground ( about 24,000 feet) somewhere in Peru ( Amazon forest).
Only one woman survived the fall ( which she was with her mother on the flight ) and she managed to walk part of the forest for 10 days without food or water until she found people help. She remained strapped to her seat and the Amazon's trees acted like a cushion.
The film is Miracles Still Happens.

First off: I think none of us keyboard warriors could even begin to comprehend such a horrific and terrible event, to be in a plane crash, to survive that and then plummet a few thousand feet Inna giant out of control sled. Now that the immediate danger is gone you now notice your friends, teammates, and even family are gravely injured or sadly already dead. After all that and surviving while seeing more friends and loved ones die to then have so many killed by nature. Now you hear your alone, not being looked for, are out of food. Second: in that area of the world they are super religious often, so eating someone is a big big thing, but if they don't they die and Third: the dead are friends and loved ones, are terrible a thing as it is, you have to ask, if your mother or best friend died and you would to, or you could eat them and live, what would they want, if I'm already dieing or dead I'd want my friend or loved ones to live.

NO ONE has the right to pass judgment on them… I can’t even begin to imagine how hard that decision was. Imagine being the family of the survivor who died because they refused to eat, knowing that they could have survived if they’d just made a different, still-incomprehensibly-difficult, choice.
