The band was formed with five members in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The band consisted of vocalist Shawn O'Brien, lead guitarist Thomas Buser, rhythm guitarist Wes Jenkins, bassist and keyboardist Brandon Lawrance and drummer Johnny Bay.
O'Brien and Buser started the project in 2010. They released a couple of singles online. When O'Brien decided that he was going to become a solo artist, he had set up several different projects across the nation with many different people. But none of those projects had topped Above This. The name comes from the experience that one may face when dealing with rejection, misjudgment, or denial from their friends or family. When O'Brien got kicked out of his first legit band around 2009, he told himself that he wouldn't join another band anytime soon, but after meeting the other members of the band and connecting, they became a band.
Some time later, Jenkins, Lawrance and Bay left the band and Buser took over the role for producing the instrumentals while O'Brien did the vocals. During these years, they released two albums "7L7" in 2010 and "Titanium" in 2013, and two EPs, "Empire" in 2012 and "Hyrax" in 2015.
Eventually Buser also left the project, and O'Brien continued on with the project with different collaborations. The album "Alloquy" was made with Zachary Stitleler in 2015, and the album "Chapter 7" was made with Cameron Ayala and Nicholas Shtyrlov in 2016.
Shtyrlov eventually became a more integral part of the band, now producing all instrumentals for Above This.
O’Brien has built an empire consisting of producers, designers, promoters and engineers that have helped him successfully release several albums since they started. O’Briens ability to recruit talent via social media has allowed the internet band to monetise its music worldwide. Over the years the project has experimented with a variety of sounds including rapping and edm/trap and O’Brien continues to work on future projects amongst different genres.

Karma has picked its next, report to the battlefield
Make your money make your profit running from us will never stop it
All the saints and sinners please report to the battlefeild
The war goes on. Nothing can tell
Nothing ever changes its always the same
The battle goes onward and leaves us in shame
Look past your sorrow and seek the truth
We are the ones that protect your country
All of your towns have burned into nothing
Breathing this smoke will only make you higher
Keep your head down when the guns start to fire
Make up your mind, if you have what it takes
To be alive, and make some simple mistakes
Lift up your head, and make the best of this
Leave out the rest, and know this war was for the best
This war is for the best, for the best
I was the boy that you left back in Nile
Where have i been? but the war took awhile
This is the ending of all that we know now
Look for the main base and capture the home town
Pull through the hard times to get through this weather
A helping hand only makes you feel better
Make up your mind if this is what you wanted
Your purpose is rotten but never forgotten now
Lets take a stand, for the ones we love
Scatter but what the fuck does it matter?
Scatter but what the fuck does it.
FINISH HIM!
This is no rio
What is the purpose of war? we stand here just begging for more
Lips quiver, they'll never cross the river, they′ll never bring me down!
The lyrics of Above This's song "Trux De Rio" portrays the power dynamics and tragedy of war. The song starts by calling upon "saints and sinners" to report to the battlefield as karma has picked its next. The lyrics convey a sense of helplessness and resignation as the battle continues without a clear resolution: "The war goes on. Nothing can tell, Nothing ever changes it's always the same, The battle goes onward and leaves us in shame." It is clear that the singer believes this futile war has been fought for a cause that is not worth the cost. The lyrics showcase how war causes destruction and loss of life: "All of your towns have burned into nothing, Breathing this smoke will only make you higher."
However, the song ultimately calls for resilience and perseverance: "Lift up your head, and make the best of this, Leave out the rest, and know this war was for the best." The singer emphasizes the need to stay strong and fight for family and love: "Lets take a stand, for the ones we love, Scatter but what the fuck does it matter?" The song ends on a triumphant note with the singer expressing his determination to not be defeated: "Lips quiver, they'll never cross the river, they′ll never bring me down!"
