In 1989, the group signed with Eazy-E's Ruthless Records. While there, the group became an additional influence in pioneering with N.W.A. Their first album on Ruthless, 1990's Livin' Like Hustlers, featured a guest appearance from N.W.A and production from Dr. Dre. Above the Law member Cold 187um worked closely with Dre on production, and the two greatly influenced each other. The songs "Murder Rap" and "Untouchable" became minor hits from the album. "Murder Rap" appeared in the 2008 film Pineapple Express. The song "Freedom of Speech" was featured in the 1990 movie Pump Up the Volume and its soundtrack album. In September 1990, members of Above the Law clashed with Ice Cube and his posse, Da Lench Mob, during the annual New Music Seminar conference.
The group's first full-length album, Livin' Like Hustlers, was released in 1990. This album, which came out before Dr. Dre's The Chronic, featured a similar G-Funk sound. Cold 187um has claimed that he was the first to pioneer the G-Funk style and that Dr. Dre's new sound was largely inspired by his work on that album. In 1994, the group released Uncle Sam's Curse, their last album on Ruthless Records. It included the minor hit "Black Superman".
Shortly after Eazy-E's death, the group signed with Tommy Boy Records in 1996. There, they released Time Will Reveal in 1996 and Legends in 1999. In the same year, the group signed with Suge Knight's Death Row Records, but they left the label in 2002. Above the Law was also part of the West Coast Rap All-Stars, contributing to "We're All in the Same Gang," a 1990 collaboration of West Coast hip-hop artists promoting an anti-violence message.
On the morning of July 7, 2012, multiple sources confirmed that emcee KMG the Illustrator had died. Longtime Above the Law affiliate Kokane announced the rapper's death on his Twitter account the same day. While the cause of death remains officially unknown, Big Hutch stated that he died of a heart attack while taking a shower. He was 43 years old.
Four of the group's most popular music videos, "Black Superman," "Call It What U Want" featuring 2Pac, "V.S.O.P.," and the long-form music video "V.S.O.P. REMIX" were written and directed by Marty Thomas, Eazy-E's longtime Ruthless Records film director. Thomas also wrote and directed the controversial and ultimately banned Uncle Sam's Curse album television commercials. These commercials featured disturbing imagery, including the KKK chasing Above the Law past a church with burning torches and a white "Uncle Sam" pulling a newborn African-American baby from its mother's arms. The commercial won several prestigious international awards.
According to Kokane, a new Above the Law album was recorded before KMG's death. Cold 187um has stated that over 30 unreleased tracks were recorded while KMG was still alive, with the rumored title Victims of Global Politics. However, no release date has been announced.
Above the Law claims to have invented the "G-funk" sound, which was later popularized by Dr. Dre's The Chronic.

Like we never did before
Since the prices went up for a piece a ass
See I still get freebies cause I got gap
And when it comes to the question
"What have you done for me lately?"
Yo, G, I make them bitches hate me
Ya try and play the role and ain't nothin but a hood rat
So don't front yeah you're names Terri not Halle
But you sprung like a motherfucker when I
Hit that berry and let a hoe know what's poppin
Cause it comes with the territory when you come a jockey
Everything will be all right
Everything will be all right
Everything will be all right
Everything will be all right
Yeah I'm in the mood I need a hoe with much aptitude
To creep wicked, to come kick it
With the P-I-M-P, pimp clinic number 1
Ya say I ain't shit but cha sprung
But ya holds the number then folds the number
Then ya crawls to my house for a late night slumber
Yeah cause bitches in the 90s ain't shit
They claim that they a lady steady suckin every other niggaz dick
So now you at my house on my couch screamin out
My name, my status and my motherfuckin clout
"And ya nigga don't know what's goin on"
Cause he always broke and he always gone
Now people might say that I am scandlous
But it ain't my fault if a bitch can't handle this
Now I just had lit a flya show
I bumped up so I gotta spit at the hoe
Yeah she bound to let me smoke but make no mistake
I gotta 8 year bid next day for a rape
Owww, actin like crows
And ya wonder why we call ya bitches and skeezas and hoes
Yeah, she shoulda used the fuckin mase
Tryin to come up on the homie cause the county check was late
Uh, that's the problem with you bitches now-a-days
Since you drop a couple a babies think you kickin it and gettin paid
I waitin for Mr. Timesalt
So he can pull yo fuckin creep up, and pay my fuckin bills off
I only speak of what I've been through best believe I've been around
From the pimp clinic, hip, keep ya veins in ya fuckin mouth
Bitches used to treat me like a bowl of onion soup
Now they gettin tossed on the hood of my Lexus Coupe
I keep clownin as you hoes cause you boos
I got the hat, the nose, and the motherfuckin funny shoes
I clown on the witness I kick this
Bookers in my business, know that I'm attracted to the bomb
And ya know the thing is ones around that like to play
And hit you up with that ass with no delay
Shit, I learned hoes like takin off they clothes
When them 100 dollar bills is on the flo' really doe
Everything will be all right
Everything will be all right
Everything will be all right
Everything will be all right
The lyrics to "Everything Will Be Allright" by Above the Law tell the story of a pimp and his views on women. The singer boasts about his ability to manipulate and control women. He doesn't see them as people, but instead as objects for his pleasure and gain. He talks about how he gets free sex from women because of his power over them, and how he can make them hate him because of it. He also describes how women are only interested in him because of his money and status, and how he uses their desperation to assert his dominance.
The song also touches on the societal issues of the 90s, particularly the lack of respect for women and the glorification of "pimp culture." The singer takes a cynical view of society, where women are considered inferior and exploited for male satisfaction. The lyrics, while shocking and vulgar, showcase the harsh reality of urban life and the sexism and misogyny that still plagues society.
