Computerstaat
Abwärts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Montag klopft es an die Tür
Und Arafat, der steht neben dir
Dienstag gibt es Probealarm
Paranoia in der Straßenbahn
Mittwoch ist der Krieg sehr kalt
Breschnew lauert in der Badeanstalt

Donnerstag, du weißt es schon
Tausend Agenten in der Kanalisation
Freitag gehört der Mafia
Das Ravioli kommt aus Florida
Samstag Abend, Irrenanstalt
Der KGB im deutschen Wald
Sonntag, da ist alles tot
Im Golf von Mallorca der Weltkrieg droht

Stalingrad, Stalingrad
Deutschland Katastrophenstaat

Wir leben im Computerstaat

Wir leben im Computerstaat
Wir leben im Computerstaat

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Abwärts's song Computerstaat paint a picture of a dystopian society, where paranoia and fear have become the norm. The opening lines describe a visitor knocking on the door on a Monday, only to find Arafat, the former Palestine Liberation Organization leader, standing beside you. This is followed by a description of a Tuesday with a "Probealarm," or emergency drill, which creates fear and paranoia among commuters in the streetcar. Wednesday is described as a day when the "Krieg," or war, is very cold, with Breschnew lurking in the public swimming pool. Thursday is a day when there are "Tausend Agenten," or a thousand agents, lurking in the sewers. Friday is a day when ravioli comes from Florida, ushering in a sense of foreboding as if the mafia is gaining control. Saturday sees people in the asylum, while the KGB is positioned in the German forest. On Sunday, everything is "dead," with the threat of a war that could break out in the Gulf of Mallorca.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Wir leben im Computerstaat," which means "We live in the computer state." This chorus emphasizes that this dystopian society is controlled by computers and technology, which people have become powerless against. The song ends by mentioning Stalingrad, which was a catastrophic turning point in World War II for the German army, and expressing that Germany has become a "Katastrophenstaat" or "catastrophic state," inferring that they might once again be destined for war.

@Martin Heuberger Es ging mir natürlich um das runde Jubiläum des Tracks. Glaubst du bis 2020 wird der Staat menschlicher und die Konflikte auf der Welt abnehmen?

Martin Heuberger
