Softly and Tenderly
Acappella Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling
Calling for you and for me
See on the portals he's waiting and watching
Watching for you and for me

English Chorus:
Come home, come home
Ye who are weary, come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling, O sinner come home

Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading?
Pleading for you and for me
Why should we linger and heed not his mercies?
Mercies for you and for me

Repeat Chorus

Oh, pour le merveilleux amour qu'il a promis
Nous a promis, toi et moi
Et bien que nous pechions, Il nous offre son pardon
Pardon pour toi et our moi

French Chorus:
Reviens, reviens
Toi, qui te lasses reviens
Sincerement, tendrement, Jesus appelle
(T')Appelle, oh pecheur, reviens

Repeat English Chorus

Scriptural Reference:

"As a prisoner of the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received." Ephesians 4:1

Overall Meaning

The song Softly and Tenderly by Acappella begins with the line "Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me." The lyrics suggest that Jesus is watching and waiting at the portals for the singer and his/her audience. The song is an invitation for the weary, troubled and sinful individuals to come home to Jesus, repent of their sins and be forgiven. The urgency in the lyrics is emphasized by the repetition of the English chorus "Come home, come home, Ye who are weary, come home. Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, Calling, O sinner come home."

The second verse asks the question "Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading?" suggesting that people should not wait to respond to Jesus' call but should rather heed his mercies. The French chorus emphasizes this point by saying: "Reviens, reviens, Toi, qui te lasses reviens" which means "Come back, come back, you who are tired, Come back sincerely and tenderly, Jesus calls you (O sinner, come back)". The lyrics also highlight the promise of the wonderful love Jesus has promised and the forgiveness available to all sinners.

Overall, the song Softly and Tenderly is an invitation to come to Jesus, seek forgiveness, and become a part of his kingdom. It is a gentle yet powerful reminder to all believers to live their lives in accordance with God's calling and to spread the message of love and forgiveness to those seeking God's grace.

I remember the first time I heard this song, the Pastor at Heartland Baptist Church, a little Baptist church in Antioch, Il. sang this song, and I started weeping. I was addicted to crack-cocaine for over ten years, and after hearing this song I was healed from my addiction. I have been sober for over five years now. Praise God!

I remember listening to this song with my brother as we were driving to the hospital to say goodbye to our grandfather who had died that morning. It was heartbreaking and joyous at the same time as we knew he was looking down on us from Heaven. Shortly after that I accepted Christ as my savior once and for all. Sin has been my enemy ever since. I still remember how peaceful he was when he died. It’s something you never forget.
