Death come a knockin' on that sinner's door
Said, "Oh, sinner are you ready to go?"
He said, "No, no, no, no, no no no
Because I ain't got on my travelin shoes (ain't paid my dues)"

Chorus:
Yeah Singin', "no, no, no"
Oh, Lordy, "no, no, no"
Because I ain't got on my travelin' shoes

Death come a knockin' on that lier's door
Said, "Oh, lier are you ready to go?"
He said, "No, no, no, no, no no no
Because I ain't got on my travelin shoes (ain't paid my dues)"

Repeat Chorus

Death come a knockin' on that gambler's door

Yeah singin', "Yes, yes, yes"
Oh, Lordy, "Yes, yes, yes
Because I just got on my travelin shoes"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics for Acappella's "Travelin' Shoes" caution listeners to be prepared for death, as it may come at any moment. The song starts with death knocking at the door of a sinner, and his response is a defiant "no" because he has not yet paid his dues, symbolized by not having his travelin' shoes on. The chorus echoes this sentiment, asking the Lord for more time to prepare.

The song progresses with death continuing to knock on the doors of a liar and a gambler. Each man responds with the same "no," citing their lack of travelin' shoes. However, the final verse portrays a Christian who is ready to go because he has put on his travelin' shoes. The second chorus praises the Christian who has prepared for death and is now ready to face it.

The song encourages listeners to be prepared and live a life that is ready for judgment. The use of the travelin' shoes is a metaphor for being ready to leave this world and enter the afterlife. The song also takes a religious perspective, calling upon Christians to live a life that is ready for the Lord's return as stated in Matthew 24:44.
