Their current lineup consists of Hoffmann, vocalist Mark Tornillo, guitarists Uwe Lulis and Philip Shouse, drummer Christopher Williams and bassist Martin Motnik. Before arriving at their current lineup, Accept has undergone numerous lineup changes, being Hoffmann the last remaining original member since its inception, and he is the only band member to appear on each album.
Accept played an important role in the development of speed and thrash metal, and they were part of the German heavy metal scene, which emerged in the early to mid-1980s. They have also been cited as an influence or inspiration by a number of acts, including Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Testament, Anthrax, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Overkill, Exodus, and Annihilator, as well as fellow Germans such as Helloween, Blind Guardian, Doro, Sodom, Rage, and Grave Digger. Accept achieved its first commercial success with their fifth studio album Balls to the Wall (1983), which is the band's only album to be certified gold in the United States and Canada, and spawned their well-known hit "Balls to the Wall".
Accept have broken up and reformed multiple times. They first split up in 1989, several months after the release of Eat the Heat (which was their only album with Dirkschneider's initial replacement David Reece), but reformed in 1992 and released three more albums before disbanding again in 1997. After briefly reuniting in 2005, Accept announced their third reunion in 2009, with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo replacing Dirkschneider (who declined to participate), and the band has recorded five albums with him: Blood of the Nations (2010), Stalingrad (2012), Blind Rage (2014), The Rise of Chaos (2017) and Too Mean to Die (2021); each of those albums renewed Accept's popularity in Germany and entered the top ten charts there.

Won't take the fruit off the tree
And ev'rybody says I'm out for the kill
They're all laughing at me
They're all laughing at me
I'm a rebel, rebel
I'm a rebel, rebel
And they're all laughing at me
They say I'm a danger to the public and all
I only wish they would see
I'm just the product of a screwed up world
But they're all
They're all laughing at me
But they're all laughing at me
I'm a rebel, rebel
Don't you just know it
I'm a rebel, rebel
Don't you just know it
I'm a rebel, rebel
But' they're all laughing at me
Never ever was my old blue jeans
And brush the smile off my face
But still I'm a member of the
Human race
Human race
Human race
Human race
The lyrics to Accept's song "I'm A Rebel" speak to the experience of being an outsider, someone who is seen as different or dangerous by society. The singer reflects on how others view him, saying that people believe he won't make it to the top or succeed in life. Despite this, he embraces his rebelliousness, declaring himself a rebel and wearing it like a badge of honor. He feels that he is misunderstood by the world, that he is simply a product of a broken system, but others cannot see this. The repetition of the phrase "They're all laughing at me" suggests a sense of isolation and hurt, but at the same time, there is a resilience and pride in the chorus as the singer reiterates his status as a rebel.
The song can be interpreted as a commentary on societal norms and expectations. It speaks to the pressure to conform and be like everyone else, and the ostracism that can result from breaking away from those norms. It also touches on the idea of perception and how others view us, and the frustration that can arise when our true selves are not understood or accepted by those around us. Overall, "I'm A Rebel" is a defiant anthem for anyone who has ever felt misunderstood or left out.
