Their current lineup consists of Hoffmann, vocalist Mark Tornillo, guitarists Uwe Lulis and Philip Shouse, drummer Christopher Williams and bassist Martin Motnik. Before arriving at their current lineup, Accept has undergone numerous lineup changes, being Hoffmann the last remaining original member since its inception, and he is the only band member to appear on each album.
Accept played an important role in the development of speed and thrash metal, and they were part of the German heavy metal scene, which emerged in the early to mid-1980s. They have also been cited as an influence or inspiration by a number of acts, including Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Testament, Anthrax, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Overkill, Exodus, and Annihilator, as well as fellow Germans such as Helloween, Blind Guardian, Doro, Sodom, Rage, and Grave Digger. Accept achieved its first commercial success with their fifth studio album Balls to the Wall (1983), which is the band's only album to be certified gold in the United States and Canada, and spawned their well-known hit "Balls to the Wall".
Accept have broken up and reformed multiple times. They first split up in 1989, several months after the release of Eat the Heat (which was their only album with Dirkschneider's initial replacement David Reece), but reformed in 1992 and released three more albums before disbanding again in 1997. After briefly reuniting in 2005, Accept announced their third reunion in 2009, with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo replacing Dirkschneider (who declined to participate), and the band has recorded five albums with him: Blood of the Nations (2010), Stalingrad (2012), Blind Rage (2014), The Rise of Chaos (2017) and Too Mean to Die (2021); each of those albums renewed Accept's popularity in Germany and entered the top ten charts there.

Accept Lyrics

Prisoners upon this rock, flying without wings
Captured in a moment, still the hours chimed
Joining closer as it shifted with the sands of time
Parallel dimensions, gears fall into place
Driven by an unseen force, swelling into space
Passengers without a choice, slowly turning gray
On through the night, shine on forever
Going insane as we ride the time machine
On through the night, shine on forever
Going insane as we ride the time machine
Ride the time machine
Waiting for no one, relative to none
Answering to not a thing, except the rising sun
Bouncing on this fabric, at the speed of light
Connecting points of futures past, is its only plight
Out beyond the rainbow, cross the milky way
Passengers without a choice, slowly turning gray
On through the night, shine on forever
Going insane as we ride the time machine
Ride the time machine
Passengers without a choice, hanging by a string
Spending with a hands of time, flying without wings
On through the night, shine on forever
Going insane as we ride the time machine
On through the night, shine on forever
Going insane as we ride the time machine
Ride the time machine
Accept's 'Time Machine' is a sci-fi themed metal ballad that explores the idea of time travel and the existential implications that come with it. The song starts with a metaphorical reference to the ticking of the clock and the passing of time, emphasizing the restriction of human life on this planet. The phrase 'Prisoners upon this rock, flying without wings' speaks to the sense of feeling trapped within the limits of our physical universe, like being shackled to a small rock that we are forced to inhabit. As the song progresses, it explores the idea of time as a force that drives everything forward, with the line 'Parallel dimensions, gears fall into place' suggesting that the wheels of time move beyond human understanding, and things are happening outside of our conscious grasp. The song's title and primary metaphor, the time machine, is the solution presented to escape the mundane reality of life by travelling to different points in time and dimensions.
There is also a sense of inevitability in the lyrics, where the passing of time and the universe moving forward provide no escape from our fate. The line 'Passengers without a choice, slowly turning gray' highlights the notion that even though time travel offers the hope of escaping the limitations of the physical world, we cannot escape aging and we are still captive to the inevitability of time. The song's chorus captures the feeling of being consumed by the experience of riding a time machine, becoming almost addicted to the power and freedom it offers. This is seen in the repetition of the line 'Going insane as we ride the time machine,' which emphasizes the thrill and urgency of the journey through time.
