Things You Say
Acceptance Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
See yourself
Behind the scene lies more than you can understand yourself
Stand yourself
Now they tell you what you want to hear
But when they're done will you still live in fear?
And everything you said to me put me on my knees
I can't believe a thing you say
You're told that selfishness will guide your path
What will you do when that just doesn't last?
And everything you said to me put me on my knees
It's so hard to believe in you
I'm not quite clear what I should do
And now I know that you're the only one
But do they know that you're the only one
And I can't believe a thing you say
I can't believe a thing you say
It's so hard to believe in things that you can't see...
The lyrics to Acceptance's song Things You Say discusses the struggle of believing in something that cannot be seen and the result of blindly following what others tell you to believe. The lyrics provide a commentary on the pressure individuals feel to conform to society's beliefs and expectations, despite the lack of personal understanding or conviction. The repetition of "I can't believe a thing you say" highlights the distrust and disillusionment towards the messages being conveyed by those in positions of authority or influence.
The second verse specifically calls out the idea of selfishness as a guiding principle and the consequences of following such a belief, ultimately leading to disappointment and a loss of faith. The lyrics also touch upon the theme of individual choice and agency, with lines like "I'm not quite clear what I should do" and "But do they know that you're the only one". This highlights the internal conflict of wanting to make one's own decisions but being unsure of the right path.
Overall, the lyrics to Things You Say provide a sobering reminder to question what we're being told and to have faith in what we believe, even if it goes against the norm.
