PFFFFFF! Yeah right! What are you? The King of Knots? You think you're the freaking King of Tying Knots??
Florida’s heat has been radiating over hip-hop for many years. From the legendary “Uncle” Luke Campbell, Trick Daddy and Trina to DJ Khaled, Flo Rida, T-Pain, Rick Ross and Plies, the sunshine state has always produced hot music. The next artist to emerge from this sizzling climate is Ace Hood, and with an ace on the top of the deck, he is guaranteed to continue Florida’s heat wave.
“I got the name Ace as a child. My family always thought that I would be the one who would succeed in whatever I did,” he explains. “I feel like I’m an army in myself. I carry my own weight and since I represent for the hood, why not attach that to my name?”
Born Antoine McColister in Broward County, Florida, Ace knew he was destined for greatness. After an injury derailed his burgeoning football career, Ace turned to his true passion, rapping. At the age of 17, Ace teamed up with the Broward-County-based entertainment label, Dollaz & Dealz, to record the hit "M.O.E." ("Money Over Everything") which sparked an immediate buzz in South Florida. Ace began to perform and network which helped him gain exposure like never before. After fine-tuning his craft on local crowds, he set his sights on performing for DJ Khaled at his annual birthday bash.
“We was outside the radio station not even trying to get a deal, just hoping to perform at his birthday bash,” he recalls. “We just figured we’d try and perform. He had a contest going on where you had to give a certain amount of reasons why you should perform at the birthday bash. So I was going to rap for him on camera and show him why I was worthy. Although he had to go to a meeting, he came out, looked at me and said I love his image. We handed him a CD and once we did that he listened to it and called my manager that night. He said I love his swag, I hear starvation in his music and I want to take a meeting with him.”
That meeting turned into Ace becoming the first artist signed to DJ Khaled’s label “We the Best” distributed by Def Jam Records. His hot new single “Cash Flow” featuring T-Pain and Rick Ross is currently blazing the radio waves everywhere. “Once I played the song for Rick Ross he loved it and he put his whole swag to it” explains Khaled. “The song was pretty much done but we felt to make it more of a hit record, get somebody like T-Pain who’s running the game right now, on the hook to make it go that much further.” The song is setting the stage for Ace’s debut album, Gutta, with guest appearances from some of rap’s elite including Trick Daddy, Flo Rida, Akon, Plies and production from Cool & Dre, The Runners, Danjahandz and J.U.S.T.C.E. League, Ace’s deck is definitely stacked.
“This album is definitely gonna be a classic,” Ace says confidently. “People are expecting a lot out of me not only because I’m on Khaled’s label, but because everyone knows that the ace is ranked as the highest.”
With an ace up your sleeve, how can you go wrong?

Let me tell you one thing
Don't get caught slipping out here on these streets homeboy
Keep your eyes and ears open, you understand?
Because it might go down
When the traps side up and the MAC slow down
You better hit the deck because it might go down
Don't get caught slipping, yeah it might go down
Don't get caught slipping, because it might go down
Keep an eye on your nigga, and running around town
Yeah this little boy telling so it might go down
Don't get caught slipping, yeah it might go down
Don't get caught slipping, yeah it might go down
[Verse 1]
Young nigga seventeen, trying to get money
Niggas laugh about the dough but really ain't shit funny
Just watch who you serve with them birds little buddy
Every fiend ain't a fiend if you see them look funny
You better tell your team, you don't need that money
That shit smell funny, you ain't getting shit from me
I stacked a couple hundred fiends on these something
That white keep coming, tell the boy to keep bumping
Well watch these folks keeping enemies close
And any nigga kin to me they better not fold
He say that he a friend to me but snitching to the po'
He pointing on the court, tell the judge what he know
Price on his head, he be dead by four, so homie don't slip
Or you could be him, no speaking on the phone
Because them FEDS get tips, don't get caught slipping
Because it might be them
[Chorus]
[Verse 2]
And I won't be slipping, the boy's on a mission
Only vision of winning and my sight is on a million
Serving that white girl to any nigga want to get it
And fresh Louis linen dawg can call that pimping
That thing on my side, homeboy I ain't slipping
Your boy's off snitching, tell them niggas ain't with it
It might go down, so watch you do a round
Niggas creep in the town leave bodies left on the ground
(Don't get caught slipping)
Because the chopper get down
I stay in all black with a Florida Marlin crown
So keep away the faking ain't a real nigga around
If you ever go down stay loyal to your fam'
And you don't know shit, never snitching on the mound
And homie don't slip, because it might go down
Yeah homie don't slip, it might go down
And homie don't slip, because it might go down
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
And I run my city, I own my town
Can't another man come and disrespect my grounds
You eyeing my nigga, you want something with him?
You want to come get it, you'll be dodging my missiles
Yeah boy it went down, your homie done slipped
And now he in a coffin on a first class trip
Yeah boy it went down, your homie done slipped
And now he in a coffin on a first class trip
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Ace Hood's song Don't Get Caught Slippin' seem to focus on the dangers of living in rough neighbourhoods and the need to keep alert to avoid getting caught up in potentially dangerous situations. The chorus repeatedly warns about the possibility of violence, advising listeners to be vigilant and not to let their guard down. Ace Hood shares his own experiences and offers advice, cautioning against getting involved in drug deals with dodgy characters, warning about snitches, and emphasising the need for loyalty to family and friends. The final verse suggests that those who disrespect his neighbourhood can expect to face the consequences of their actions.
The chorus of the song is very catchy and memorable, with the repeated warning 'don't get caught slipping' acting as a kind of hook. It's a song that speaks to people living in tough places, where always being aware of your surroundings is crucial to survival. The lyrics are direct and to the point, lacking in subtlety but making up for it in raw honesty. There's no sugar-coating the realities of life in rough neighbourhoods, and Ace Hood's lyrics reflect this.
