Come Together
Across the Universe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here come old flat top
He come groovin' up slowly
He got ju-ju eyeball
He one holy roller
He got hair down to his knees
Got to be a joker
He just do what he please
He wear no shoeshine
He got toe jam football
He got monkey finger
He shoot Coca Cola
He say I know you, you know me
One thing I can tell you is
You got to be free
Come together, right now
Over me

He bag production
He got walrus gumboot
He got Ono sideboard
He one spinal cracker
He got feet down below his knees
Hold you in his arms yeah
You can feel his disease
Come together, right now
Over me

He roller coaster
He got early warning
He got muddy water
He one Mojo filter
He say one and one and one is three
Got to be good looking
'cause he's so hard to see
Come together right now
Over me

Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah

Come together, yeah
Come together, yeah

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song describes the arrival of a mysterious figure, Flat Top, who is portrayed as a free-spirited and unconventional individual. He is characterized as having long hair and dressing casually, without shoes, and carrying with him a football made of toe jam. He is also said to have a peculiar habit of shooting Coca Cola out of his monkey finger. The lyrics may be interpreted as a call to let go of societal norms and embrace individuality, a theme that is prevalent throughout the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

The chorus, "Come together, right now, over me," is a rallying cry for unity and harmony. It represents a desire to put aside differences and work towards a common goal or purpose. This sentiment is reinforced in the second verse where Flat Top is described as a unifier who can hold you in his arms and heal you of your disease. The final verse describes Flat Top as a roller coaster, someone who can take you on a wild ride and warn you of impending danger. The song ultimately ends with an enthusiastic repetition of the chorus as if to emphasize the importance and urgency of the message.

I'm surprised no one's mentioning how tight the harmony is with the women in this scene. Great addition with Mr. Cocker who had one of the most iconic voices of our time.

the camera angles and colors and EVERYTHING about this movie is genius. You can tell so much planning went into it, and they carried each scene out perfectly with all the right elements. Any film/production student would ADORE this movie. It's genuinely perfection.

The music covers and choreography were just absolutely mind bogglingly insane. That in my opinion is what made this a great movie

Across the Universe is one of my favorite movies of all time. There's nothing really spectacular about it. It just works on all levels.

I love how all the songs that are used are tied to the events in the movie

Joe crocker has my favorite type of voice, sounds like he just gargled hot oil, but he can still hit those notes like a boss.

Agreed. Not only the best song of the movie but the greatest version of 'Come Together' of all time by the irrepressible Joe Cocker & wonderful harmony singers.

I remember watching this movie, and I'll admit some of the trippy scenes are a bit hard to watch but this scene really caught my attention with masterfulness. The cinematography is just beautiful and appealing, the choreography is really unique, and of course the fact that it's the same guy playing all those singers is just brilliant. I loved this song so much, but I may like this cover even more.
