Across the Universe Lyrics

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, 'til I belong to you

Every night, when everybody has fun
Here am I, sitting all on my own

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, 'til I belong to you

Since you left me, I'm so alone
Now you're coming, you're coming on home
I'll be good like I know I should
You're coming home, you're coming home

Every night, the tears come down from my eyes
Every day, I've done nothing but cry

It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, yeah, yeah
It won't be long yeah, 'til I belong to you

Since you left me, I'm so alone
Now you're coming, you're coming on home
I'll be good like I know I should
You're coming home, you're coming home

Every day, we'll be happy, I know
Now I know that you won't leave me no more

Yeah, yeah, yeah

Yeah, yeah
Yeah, 'til I belong to you

Overall Meaning

"It Won't Be Long" is a romantic song by the Beatles released in 1963. The song starts with the singer stating that it won't be long until they belong to their lover. The singer is an observer in social situations, watching everyone else have fun while they sit alone. The chorus repeats the idea that soon they will belong to their lover, suggesting an eagerness to end this loneliness. The second verse focuses on the singer being alone since their lover left, but the singer is comforted by the fact that their lover is returning home soon. The singer expresses their faith that things will be better and they will be good. The final verse expresses the eagerness both parties feel for the reunion and the happiness it will bring them.

The song is a call and response song, with the lead vocal sung by John Lennon, and the “yeah, yeah, yeah” responses sung by Paul McCartney and George Harrison. "It Won't be Long" was recorded a week before the album was released in the UK, which is unusual because the Beatles normally recorded one or two months before the release date. John Lennon wrote the song with inspiration from Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely”. The song was first heard in the US on the "Meet The Beatles!" album, released in 1964.
