Everybody's just passing through.
Everybody's a stranger,
Everybody's just passing through.
We're all looking for somebody,
Who's looking for us too,
Tryin' to find our way off Lonesome Avenues.
Everybody's a stranger,
Everybody's just passing through.
Everybody's a stranger,
Everybody's just passing through.
We're all looking for somebody,
Who's looking for us too,
Tryin' to find our way off Crowded Avenues.
Look at all the lonely people,
Afraid of other lonely people,
It's unbelievable.
Everybody's a stranger,
Everybody's just passing through.
Everybody's a stranger,
Everybody's just passing through.
Everybody's a stranger
Adam Cohen's song "Stranger" reflects on the universal feeling of loneliness and searching for human connection. The repetition of "Everybody's a stranger, everybody's just passing through" reinforces how we are all strangers in this world, trying to find our place and connect with others. The line "We're all looking for somebody, who's looking for us too" emphasizes the desire for mutual love and companionship.
The song's title refers to the concept of being a "stranger" in a foreign place, but Cohen expands the definition to include our daily environments where we feel disconnected and isolated from one another. The lines "Tryin' to find our way off Lonesome Avenues" and "Tryin' to find our way off Crowded Avenues" suggest that regardless of where we are, we struggle to navigate through life and find genuine connections. The song's final line, "Look at all the lonely people, afraid of other lonely people, it's unbelievable," highlights how our own fears and insecurities can prevent us from making meaningful connections with others.
