I was wasted in the afternoon waiting on a train
I woke up in pieces and Elisabeth had disappeared again
I wish you were inside of me
I hope that you're ok
I hope you're resting quietly
I just wanted to say
Goodnight Elisabeth
We couldn't all be cowboys
So some of us are clowns
And some of us are dancers on the midway
We roam from town to town
I hope that everybody can find a little flame
Me, I say my prayers,
Then I just light myself on fire
And I walk out on the wire once again
And I say
Goodnight Elisabeth
I will wait for you in Baton Rouge
I'll miss you down in New Orleans
I'll wait for you while she slips in something comfortable
And I'll miss you when I'm slipping in between
If you wrap yourself in daffodils
I will wrap myself in pain
And if you're the queen of California
Baby I am the king of the rain
And I say
Goodnight Elisabeth

My dad used to play this for me in our family's pick up truck, saying it reminded him of me. He said all of Counting Crows' songs could be pieced together to tell his life story, and this one was about me being born. He wasn't saying it was deliberate, he was just making connections. He explained everything to me and I remember it so vividly. Fall down on me was about how I used to very literally fall on him and California was his heart, so I was Queen of California. He wanted to retire to Louisiana, so that was the explanation for the Baton Rouge and New Orleans lines. My dad died last Wednesday, so I'm listening to this to remember him by. It is an amazing song

I'm sorry for your loss. Know he's still with you. Sending prayers

from a Dutch translation of this song, \possibly an even better line:
"Not everyone can be a hero, some of us need to be saved"

This whole album is so good and evokes so many emotions I honestly find it difficult to listen to at times. Maybe I just don’t want to go to the places it takes me. Memories both good and bad, personal struggle, times of genuine positivity, coupled with instances of pure naive freedom.

A great song....... this band is very underrated.

Paul Carey

Not by me they ain't. I think they're the best band in the world (genuinely so). Their versatility and longevity are testament to that.

T.D. Gray

not at all underrated

I was named after this song, and I'm very proud of it
