When We Were Young
Adele Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
From the way you talk
To the way you move
Everybody here is watching you
'Cause you feel like home
You're like a dream come true
But if by chance you're here alone
Can I have a moment
Before I go?
'Cause I've been by myself all night long
Hoping you're someone I used to know
You look like a movie
You sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
I was so scared to face my fears
Nobody told me that you'd be here
And I swear you moved overseas
That's what you said, when you left me
You still look like a movie
You still sound like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
It's hard to admit that
Everything just takes me back
To when you were there
To when you were there
And a part of me keeps holding on
Just in case it hasn't gone
'Cause I still care
Do you still care?
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
My God, this reminds me
Of when we were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
When we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were sad of getting old
It made us restless
Oh, I'm so mad I'm getting old
It makes me reckless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
When we were young
Adele's "When We Were Young" is an emotionally powerful ballad about reminiscing and longing for the past. Adele sings about the way a particular person makes her feel, how it feels like home, but also how time has passed and things have changed. She yearns to capture a moment, to freeze time and photograph the person she is with so that they can both go back to a time before they got old and restless.
The opening lines, "Everybody loves the things you do, from the way you talk to the way you move," set the tone for a love ballad. It illustrates the admiration and fondness the singer has for that special someone. The lines "But if by chance you're here alone, can I have a moment before I go?" represents the singer's desire to reconnect with someone from their past. The line "Hoping you're someone I used to know" suggests that the singer may have lost touch with this person, and they are now hoping to reconnect.
The chorus, "You look like a movie, you sound like a song, my God, this reminds me of when we were young," conjures a sense of nostalgia, and the idea of wanting to return to a time when life was simpler. The singer then goes on to sing, "Let me photograph you in this light, in case it is the last time that we might be exactly like we were before we realized we were sad of getting old. It made us restless, It was just like a movie, it was just like a song." These lyrics are poignant and universal, as they speak to the universal human experience of getting older, and how it can make us feel nostalgic for our youth.
Overall, Adele's "When We Were Young" is about longing for the past and cherishing a person from that past. Adele captures this feeling with both power and simplicity, making the song emotionally resonant for many.

Everybody loves the things you do
You have a magnetic personality and people are drawn to you
From the way you talk
Even the way you speak captivates people
To the way you move
You move effortlessly and elegantly
Everybody here is watching you
All eyes are on you, you're the center of attention
'Cause you feel like home
You make us feel comfortable and safe, like we're with family
You're like a dream come true
You're everything we've ever wanted in life
But if by chance you're here alone
If you're here without anyone around you
Can I have a moment
Will you indulge me and let me have a conversation with you
Before I go?
Before I leave from here
'Cause I've been by myself all night long
I've been lonely and I have desperately been waiting for someone to talk to
Hoping you're someone I used to know
I'm hoping you're someone that I had met in the past
You look like a movie
You look breathtakingly beautiful and glamorous
You sound like a song
You sound melodious and lyrical
My God, this reminds me
Oh my God, this is taking me back in time
Of when we were young
Of the carefree days of our youth when we had no worries in life
Let me photograph you in this light
Let me capture this moment and keep it as a memory forever
In case it is the last time
In case we never meet again
That we might be exactly like we were
That we might be together just like old times
Before we realized
Before we became aware of
We were sad of getting old
We were mourning our lost youth and were afraid of aging
It made us restless
It caused restlessness within us
I was so scared to face my fears
I was too scared to face my fears on my own
Nobody told me that you'd be here
No one informed me that you were going to be present here
And I swear you moved overseas
And I swear you had moved overseas
That's what you said, when you left me
You had said that to me when you left me behind
You still look like a movie
Even now, you still look as enchanting as a movie star
You still sound like a song
You still possess the same melodious voice that captivated me before
And a part of me keeps holding on
A part of me is still holding onto the past
Just in case it hasn't gone
Just in case it has not disappeared completely
'Cause I still care
Because I still have feelings for you
It's hard to admit that
It's tough to confess that
Everything just takes me back
Everything reminds me of the good old days
To when you were there
To the time when you were present with me
Oh, I'm so mad I'm getting old
I'm angry about getting older and losing my youth
It makes me reckless
It makes me careless and impulsive
When we were young
The memories of our youth are still fresh and it feels like it was just yesterday

@BLFulle
I'm 62 and have been fighting cancer for 14 years. My husband is 71. We've been married 38 years and just had our first grandchild. We are so in love with him.
The chorus reminds me of our life. I never dreamed I'd be so sick and I never thought he'd get old. When we have our grandson in our arms we're young again. How lucky am I to live long enough to meet my darling boy.
You look like a movie
You sound like a song
My God this reminds me, of when we were young
Let me photograph you in this light
In case it is the last time
That we might be exactly like we were
Before we realized
We were scared of getting old
It made us restless
It was just like a movie
It was just like a song
I was so scared to face my fears
