Someone Like You
Adele Adkins & Dan Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard that you're settled down,
That you found a girl and you're married now.
I heard that your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you.

Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light.
I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited,
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I had hoped you'd see my face
And that you'd be reminded
That for me it isn't over.

Never mind, I'll find someone like you.
I wish nothing but the best for you too.
Don't forget me, I beg.
I remember you said:
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead.
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead.

You know how the time flies.
Only yesterday was the time of our lives.
We were born and raised
In a summer haze,
Bound by the surprise of our glory days.

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited,
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I'd hoped you'd see my face

And that you'd be reminded

That for me it isn't over.

Never mind, I'll find someone like you.

I wish nothing but the best for you too.
Don't forget me, I beg.
I remember you said:
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead.
Nothing compares.
No worries or cares,

Regrets and mistakes.
They are memories made.
Who would have known
How bittersweet this would taste?
Never mind, I'll find someone like you.
I wish nothing but the best for you.
Don't forget me, I beg.
I remember you said:
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead.
Never mind, I'll find someone like you.
I wish nothing but the best for you too.
Don't forget me, I beg.
I remember you said:

Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead.
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead.

Overall Meaning

Adele Adkins & Dan Wilson's song Someone Like You is a heart-wrenching ballad about a woman visiting her former lover, now married to someone else. The lyrics are filled with emotions of sadness, regret, and acceptance. The first verse speaks of the singer hearing about her ex's new life and love, and she realizes that he has found happiness with someone else. She acknowledges that this new partner gave him something that she could not, and it makes her wonder about their past.

The chorus speaks of her wanting the best for him but not being able to forget him. She remembers his words about love sometimes hurting and sometimes lasting, and that she is not the only one who has been hurt by love. The second verse reminisces about the good times they shared and how they were once young and carefree. The singer still longs to be with her ex but knows that it's not possible. The bridge speaks of memories and how they're part of life, whether good or bad. The song ends on a hopeful note that the singer will find someone like her ex who will love her just as much.

Dan is a testament to the great Minneapolis sound in the late 80's/early 90s and beyond. Such an incredible singer/songwriter. The raw emotion within his voice is something that can't be taught. His entire catalog from Trip Shakespeare to more recent co-writes (ie. When the Stars come out on Chris Stapleton's Traveller album) resonate so strongly with lyrical emotion. Good stuff.

Ricky Molina

Love this version! I think it blows away the more popular version. Orchestration and the male tenor are just killers. Inspiring to us songwriters. Thanks.

Easily so so miles better than adeles version

For The Love Of God

It's a shame the writer's and true musician's dont get credit for their pure brilliance.

If the song wins Song of the Year at the Grammy's or Oscars best original song (in a movie), credit goes to the songwriter/s. Also, when you buy a single/album, credits are given. names of songwriters, sound engineers, etc are mentioned.

Their paychecks make up for it. Also, your average Joe may not know them, but the artists you idolise will know them very well, so will their managers, agents, labels.

Credit? He’s getting paid

Adele also wrote the song, it's a collaborative effort, like most music.
