Garden of Earthly Pleasures
Ador Dorath Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When it drinks from the Lake bed
When the vessel is filled
The King will wash his hands
Break the dike
Open its mouth
Drive the Larvae out
Potions are made
Fish without tail
Queen Rat
The lyrics of Ador Dorath's song Garden of Earthly Pleasures are a metaphorical depiction of the corruption and downfall of humanity. The first two lines “When the sun gets drowned in a Lake, When it drinks from the Lake bed” symbolize the sun representing God, and the lake representing humans. The idea behind these lines is that humans, just like a lake, can consume or drink God’s essence until there is no more to drink. Consequently, when the vessel, representing the human soul or consciousness, is filled completely, the King, representing God or any other higher power, washes his hands of it.
The following lines, “Break the dike, Open its mouth, Drive the Larvae out, Of Poison well, Potions are made” continues this metaphor, but this time depicting humans as a poison well. Here, it seems like the band is saying that the only way to purify humanity is by breaking the toxic structures that exist within it. In other words, mankind must purge their corrupt thoughts, emotions, and actions before they can attain spiritual purity.
Finally, the last two lines, “Fish without tail, Queen Rat” seem to suggest a sort of anarchy or chaos. Fish without tails are unable to control their own movements, and queen rats represent a society that's rootless and lawless.
