Sunshine Smile
Adorable Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And then she smiled
Just for fraction of a little while
And everything was warm again inside
She's got a sunshine smile
The kind that warms up the corners of my cold room
She's got a sunshine smile
The kind that makes you forget again
Sunshine smile
Sunshine smile
Sunshine smile
Sunshine smile
And then she said
"If I'm going to be someone else
I'd rather be somebody else with you"
That's exactly how I felt to her
How does it feel?
The way I feel
Doesn't feel quite real
How does it feel to feel?
She's got a sunshine smile
The kind that warms up the corners of my cold room
She's got a sunshine smile
The kind that makes you forget again
Sunshine smile
Sunshine smile
Sunshine smile
Sunshine smile
And then she said
"If I'm going to be someone else
I'd rather be somebody else with you"
That's exactly how I felt, uh-huh
How does it feel to feel?

And for that one short while
It was as if she'd only just learned how to smile

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Adorable's "Sunshine Smile" describe the transformative effect that a person's smile can have on someone else's mood. The singer describes a moment when everything was "warm again inside," thanks to the girl's "sunshine smile." This expression implies that the girl's smile has a powerful, almost magical quality. It can light up a cold and dark space, filling it with warmth and positivity. The song also reflects on how this smile has the ability to make the singer forget his troubles and feel happy again. The phrase "Sunshine smile" is repeated often throughout the song to emphasise the idea that the girl's smile is like sunshine, brightening up everything around her.

The second half of the lyrics describe a conversation between the singer and the girl. She tells him that if she ever had to be someone else, she would rather be someone else with him. This line suggests that the girl values the connection she has with the singer, and that she would choose to spend time with him over anyone else, even in different circumstances. The singer reflects on how he feels about her, noting that his emotions don't "feel quite real." This line suggests that he may be surprised or overwhelmed by the depth of his feelings for the girl.

Overall, Adorable's "Sunshine Smile" is a love song that celebrates the power of a person's smile to bring happiness and warmth to someone else's life. It suggests that the way we feel about ourselves and others is heavily influenced by our interactions with those around us.

I went to Uni in 1993 at the age of 23. I remember meeting a girl who when she found out I came from Coventry suddenly asked me if I knew Adorable and the lead singer Pete.

I was a bit surprised since I did know of a band of that name and the lead singer was a guy named Pete Fijalkowski. I explained that I used to do a crappy temp job with him for some months a couple of years earlier and a group of four of us used to get the train together every day and then later shared a car to work, but wondered how she knew of them since as far as I knew they'd never done more than a few gigs in the local pubs.

Pete had asked us if we'd come to one at the Colin Campbell (Now the Phoenix) in 1991 (I think). There were 6 people there, including the 3 of us, all of whom were friends of the band, plus the 4 band members! I remember thinking they were better than I'd expected. I guess it must have been not too long after that they got their first record deal, but I had no idea they'd made it until I found out from this girl who seemed to be their number one fan.

Every time I saw her after that she would grab her friends excitedly and I'd be introduced as the guy who knew Pete from Adorable. I found it really weird that they all viewed him as this sexy rock star, whereas to me he was this skinny guy with a pasty face, black hair and a long fringe which covered his face. He wore a flashers mac and smoked a lot of fags, but didn't say much and used to fall asleep on the train so we'd have to wake him up every time. We used to joke about leaving him on when we got to our stop.

I was happy for him that they'd made it, but it was a bit weird finding out that this guy I'd temped with was now a star on MTV.

The crescendo would just give me chills, man. Finally remembered to look for this lost 90s classic.

Great story. This is a band I tend to forget about then always strangely come back to. Reminds me of happy, young, carefree days (and too much alcohol 😂)

Chris Morrison

This should give you a kick. I showed up for grad school in Glasgow in 1992. Brought some cassette compilation of hard core gangster rap (redman, ice cube, etc). The brit kids went mad for it. Then the first time I show up at the student social place Nirvana was blasting and all these dude's with long hair were doing this very specific hair swing dance. I was from the USA but had never heard of grunge, Seattle etc. I had to go to Scotland to find out about American bands!!!! It happened more than once.

A great band, I was very lucky to see them in 93.

El Ciclista

Saw these guys in San Francisco on the tour for this album. They put on a great show, they were much more energetic on stage than so many of the other shoegaze bands of the era.

this song for me feels like early spring, the walks in the fresh, waking nature, the first warm sunshine, omg <3
