At the age of 9, he learned playing guitar, later bass and piano, at 14, he wrote his first poems and lyrics expressing his thoughts on people's arrogance, stupidity and maliciousness. In 1993 he joined the Goth rock band Garden of Delight on bass. After their temporary split-up, Adrian Hates founded Diary of Dreams with Alistair Kane. He also founded Accession Records.

Diary of Dreams is a German music group. The lead singer and founding member Adrian Hates has produced most of the albums by himself or with minimal help from others. He rarely uses a full band, except when he is on tour. The early works Cholymelan and End Of Flowers are pure darkwave albums. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the music changed to techno-influenced genres like futurepop and electrogoth.
