Strange World
Adrian Orange Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

the cold, unwelcoming visage
of the world wants a stranger's love.
the world is such a pretty girl
and hard to get.
but one girl will be my whole world
who gives me a whole life of love
who can i not get enough of.
i'm faithfully your husband, my wife
though the whole universe is outside
and two worlds exist in the same sky.
the surreal real and what we name,
believe is real, day to day.

i hope that when the judgment comes
and old hannah sets not to come up
that we will meet where work is done
and be in love forever,
two as one.

but now the vultures have begun circling.
i know what they want with me.
it's not that i don't want no friends
but just that i'm really alone anyway
until the end.

the winter simply makes dark days

so keep a fire going
in the place.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Adrian Orange's "Strange World" speak to the alienation and loneliness that can come from simply existing in the world. The singer of the song sees the world as a cold and unwelcoming place, like a pretty girl who is hard to win over. Despite this, the singer has found one person who can provide them with the love they need to feel fulfilled. Though they acknowledge that there are two worlds that exist within the same sky - the surreal real and what we believe to be day-to-day reality - they remain faithful to their partner and hope to be with them forever.

As the song progresses, the singer acknowledges the inevitability of death and the loneliness that comes with it. They don't necessarily want to be alone, but they feel like they are anyways. The mention of the vultures circling suggests that there is danger lurking around them, whether it be literal or metaphorical. The final lines of the song encourage the listener to keep a fire going during dark days, which can be interpreted as a physical fire or a metaphor for hope and love.

Overall, "Strange World" is a poignant exploration of what it means to exist in the world and how we can find love and hope despite the challenges we face.

Saw this dude at a house show in Boise, ID circa 2006. He had a full band with him, including a couple horn players standing in a window sill because there wasn't enough room for them on the ground. The show was booked as Thanksgiving. It was so damn good! My girlfriend at the time wanted to go, straight away. I didn't leave. I think she left. We broke up eventually, thank god! I digress. This was one of the best live shows I'd seen. It was full of energy. One line I seem to remember him singing in one of his songs was "have you ever seen an asshole cry?". Great line. I hope I remember that correctly. I'm glad you uploaded this. It's bringing back good memories of crowded house shows. This dude's got talent.

I discovered this album probably a year or two after it came out. I was doing a lot of drugs at the time, and I felt a very deep connection with this music, but over time forgot the artist's name. I knew it was something to do with agent orange but I couldn't remember. I stumbled upon the albums title while reading Phil elverum's wikipedia page. I've been clean for almost a decade but this music is still very emotionally effective, and sort of serves as a link to the crazy emotions I felt a lifetime ago listening to this music.

I am only 14, and only discovered adrian and thanksgiving about a third of a year ago and I must say it's done so much to me. I wish I was born back sometime in the 1990s or something so I could've went one of his shows, they seem so cool too, also i was lucky enough to get this LP for my birthday! also came with a CDr and a little poster, I'm grateful that adrian exists because he means so much to me.
