Heavily influenced by his idol, Elvis Presley, and the 1950s rock revolution, he is also known as the most famous dancer of the Hula hoop fad. For the last 40 years he has retained his popularity in Italy, selling millions of records and appearing in numerous TV shows and movies (including a short appearance in Fellini's La Dolce Vita, before becoming a famous artist). In the latter respect, he has also been a creator of a comic genre, with his characteristic walking and his facial expressions. For the most part, his films were commercially successful, in fact in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, he was the king of the Italian box office in low budget movies. As an actor, critics point to Serafino (1968), directed by Pietro Germi, as his best effort.
As a director he frequently casts Ornella Muti, Eleonora Giorgi and his wife Claudia Mori. His best movie like director is "Yuppi Du", winner of The Golden Palm at Cannes Festival. He and Claudia are the parents of Rosita, Rosalinda and Vincent Celentano, the latter most notable to worldwide audiences for playing the Satan character in Mel Gibson`s The Passion of the Christ. He also works often as a host for several Italian television shows.
His 1968 song "Azzurro" has regained popularity in 2006, due to it being the anthem of the Italian national football team (the Azzurri) who won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The artist Vincent Fiorello has also created a remix of the song.
His last concert-event in 2012, after 18 years without live performances, was transmitted on Canale 5, with over 9 million viewers both evenings.
E Voi Ballate
Adriano Celentano Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
mi sento giù di corda
l'avete già capito
lei mi ha lasciato
e voi ballate, ballate ancora.
Vi odio tutti quanti,
non era come noi
l'abbiamo spaventata
e voi ballate
e voi ballate
ballate ancora.
Lo so, per voi nessuno ha un cuore
lo so, per voi nemmeno lei
sembrava un po' diversa
da voi che non siete innamorati mai.
Riempite il mio bicchiere
mi sento giù di corda,
piangendo sola sola
lei se n'è andata
e voi ballate
e voi ballate,
ballate ancora.
In Adriano Celentano's song "E voi ballate", the singer laments the loss of his lover and the indifference of those around him who continue to dance and enjoy themselves despite his heartbreak. The opening lines, "Riempite il mio bicchiere, mi sento giù di corda" (Fill up my glass, I'm feeling down), set a melancholic tone that is further emphasized by his bitter and resentful tone towards those who continue to dance and have fun while he is suffering. He sings, "Vi odio tutti quanti, non era come noi l'abbiamo spaventata e se n'è andata e voi ballate" (I hate you all, she wasn't like us, we scared her and she left and you still dance), expressing his disappointment at the fact that no one seems to care or empathize with his pain.
Moreover, he highlights the fact that he believes that nobody understands his emotions and pain, as he sings "Lo so, per voi nessuno ha un cuore lo so, per voi nemmeno lei sembrava un po' diversa da voi che non siete innamorati mai" (I know, for you, nobody has a heart, I know, for you, neither does she seem a little different from you who never fall in love), portraying a sense of disillusionment with those around him.
The repetition of the line "e voi ballate" (and you dance) at the end of each verse underscores the contrast between his sadness and the carefree attitude of the dancers. The line "piangendo sola sola lei se n'è andata" (she left crying alone), further intensifies the emotional turmoil the singer is feeling.
Overall, "E voi ballate" is a poignant song that speaks to the experience of heartbreak and the sense of isolation that can come with it.
